I would avoid black market like the plague! I bought my first Nikon DSLR from Amazon which was grey market. I didn't know such a thing existed! When I found out about it, I was upset because the ad (on Amazon) didn't disclose this fact, and it was too late to return it. And now, the hot shoe doesn't work and I'm stuck! I have since bought other US Nikon cameras, but this problem really sticks in my craw.

Now, when considering buying a new camera or lens, I ask the seller before buying whether or not it's gray market.

There are many places where you can get your camera fixed with no problem. Maybe even less expensive than Nikon.
Personally, I never worry about Grey Market. Never had problems that I didn't cause. And then I had them repaired locally. No problem.

depending on the camera model and the availability of parts at the repair facility. as i've continually stated, Nikon will NOT supply parts to independant photo technicians.

hope that covers you Columbia 101 journalism concerns.

Also, that is the information that Nikon USA is telling ALL of their service reps and employees. They've all been told that Nikon USA will NOT provide parts to repair any grey market cameras and vendors that do grey market repairs will not get parts to replace their inventory. They have also told their repair facilities that all cameras that are repaired will have to have serial numbers provided to Nikon USA Corporate when replacement parts are ordered. Now, Adorama, B&H and others that sell both grey market and US models may also be getting repair parts from overseas suppliers. But access to grey market repairs may have longer delays for parts than the USA Parts.

It's called attribution, Cody. That's all. You include such with your comment...but requiring the reader to do the legwork is not Kosher...

...so throw a link in there so we can check these "facts"...that's all I want to see. I believe you guys have certain information that rings true to you...but I have personal experience of having my gear (the grey stuff) worked on *by* a Nikon repair facility...would love to get to the bottom of this, not calling you liars or anything, just curious...thanks!

As you can see, you'll get no end of debate here on UHH on this subject. From my own perspective I have purchased Gray Market Camera's in the past, and from Amazon as well, and have never needed any kind of repair that would have been covered under the original Mfg. Warranty. In fact I have never needed any repairs at all! You can see from the posted Square Trade report that you have a 96+% chance of not having a problem. So in my mind it becomes a matter of % of cost savings. You said you saved $200. What % of the camera price did that represent? I have set my savings price point at 20-22% to consider buying Gray. (As to repairs? I think you can find a repair shop for any make of camera if push comes to shove, and they will do a good job of repairing.)

i understand attribution, working in the news industry. however, the reader gets to to the legwork rather than being spoon fed the information. i do not believe in lazy people wanting everything handed to them.

if you are lucky enough to have a repair facility which still has some parts in their own inventory, then fine. but should that facility attempt to obtain parts from nikon usa, then they will find the door closed to them.

Depends on what you are saying, recently i was told that for a given focal length and sensor that the angle of view can vary. Now I can not find any evidence for that at all and even sony said it doesn't.

There is no practical way of me to find proof of this, most lens reviews do not state angle of view. However why is up to me to find proof of what someone else said.

I might as well say there are dragons in kerry, can you find proof otherwise?

Am I to assume you are just too lazy to do the legwork? Or perhaps its more reasonable to assume i'm talking out of my hole.

If you can't back up what you say then it is fantasy it's your obligation to provide supporting evidence. If you can't provide evidence then its likely you are a liar or a fool. Thats a different matter to having apparent evidence disproved later.

According to my contacts (and I retired from there and still have friends (a couple that visit and go shooting with me here in Florida 3 or 4 times a year)) and all of my training there including the links that I showed you, yes. Sorry that was so wordy but I wanted to get it all in. I'm fairly sure that Canon has similar if not as aggressive rules. You either got lucky and had a repair center that had extra parts they didn't have to account for, or someone snuck it in somehow. I'm not saying that people shouldn't buy grey market but I am saying that if you buy a camera grey market, its going to be difficult to get repaired if it needs it and also may be difficult to sell. As they say, nothing is impossible but personally, taking the chance isn't worth the couple of hundred dollars that I would save on a camera. Lenses are a little different (with Nikon anyway) as the non-zoom prime lenses generally have few things that go wrong so may be worth the risk. With zoom lenses, Cameras, Strobes and other complex devices, I'm going to buy the authorized version so that I can keep it sharp, get it repaired and /or sell it easily.
