Check your local library website for access to online training. I get Lynda for free with complete exercise files.

I had the same question until I discovered an online site called "Creative Live" program. They have live courses on line that you can sign up for and watch for free, as well as an abundance of past courses that you can purchase for your viewing at your leisure. I would recommend checking it out and buying one of their Photoshop courses taught by Ben Willmore. These are outstanding. He goes step by step from the most basic and fundamental things you need to know, all the way through some pretty advanced and complex but cool uses of Photoshop. Most of these courses go on for two - four days. You can get a lot out of this instruction if you buy and own the course. This gives you the flexibility to watch it in segments and practice procedures that had just been covered before moving on to the next steps.
