For Christmas I received a Nikon 14-24 aspherical and a 24-70 aspherical lenses. Has anybody used these and found them useful. I'm thinking of sending them back.

Those two lenses are among the best that Nikon produces. The term 'aspherical' simply means that they reduce spherical aberrations. All currently produced lenses attempt to reduce spherical aberrations. Not sure why you would want to send them back. Want to sell them? How about $2000 for both?

The term asphyical means that at least one element has been ground asymmetrically and does not have a constant arc.
It's a much more expensive grind, hence the higher price and usually found in the higher priced lenses.
Done properly the shape does reduce certain aberrations more effectively.
Yes, the shape is generally found in the better more expensive lenses from any company.
But if you don't need anything that expensive, by all means exchange them for cheaper lenses or/and get more of them, or money back!
But whoever gave them to you, definately spent a large sum on them because they must have been very much trying to please you with such a wonderful gift!!!

Great lenses - enjoy them. Incredibly sharp. You must have a rich spouse or relative to gift you $4000 worth of lenses . . .
All you're missing is the 70-200 for Nikon's "Trinity" of great zoom lenses.
They are amazing.
Which 24-70....with or without VR?
Tell your benefactor I'm available for adoption!
Linda, are you still shooting with a Nikon D7000 or have you upgraded to a newer body or full-frame camera?
The D7000 has been revamped at least twice since it came out.

It's not an "attempt" to strictly eliminate aberrations, it has to do with the "SHAPE" of some of the lenses, they are NOT SPHERICAL, that's what the 'a' in aspherical means. They may be aspherical for many DIFFERENT reasons, to control coma, color fringing, etc., etc..

These are two parts of the "holy trinity" of lenses that Nikon (Nippon/Nikkor) produces, these are two of the highest quality lenses for the Nikon F mount system... You were "blessed" with these.
Give them to me! They are aspherical because some of their lens elements don't conform to a true arc.

Congratulations, you own one of the world's sharpest zooms, actually two of the world's sharpest lenses. On the down side the 14-24 is heavy and the front element is a bear to clean. The 24-70 is also heavy and not quite as sharp as the 14-24 but still a quite stellar lens in it's own right. These lenses, when matched to the proper body, can give the user extraordinary results, given the users level of expertise. I have both of these lenses, I use the 14-24 for landscape and use expensive Lee filters to cover the front element. If you are a beginner, and I am guessing you are because of the fact you are considering returning these two lenses, I will suggest returning them both and purchasing a Nikon D500 matched with two lighter zooms that may fit your situation better, the 18-200 and the 16-80. On the other hand, if you currently have a FULL FRAME NIKON, a D610, D750, D800, D810, D4, D4s, or D5 you may find these lenses to your liking. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
Don't send them back. As UHH members have already stated, aspherical lens elements are produced to correct aberrations. I think most lenses have aspherical elements now. There are different ways they are produced.
The hybrid method incorporates a special plastic that is molded onto optical glass
The glass molding method presses softened glass into a mold
The precision ground method is expensive and not suited for mass production
Whoever sent you these two top quality lenses, must be unaware that you do not deserve them, given your ignorant thinking about returning them. How ungrateful can one person be?

Lighten up, Pablo!
Can you please ask your Santa if they're open to getting some Canon or Fuji lenses for me? I'll be a really good boy for the rest of 2017......

Both the 14-24 and 24-70 are useful lenses--if in fact, one did receive them as Christmas gifts.

You'd send them back for a refund, or send them to the person who gave them to you? They cost around $2,000 each. I'd suggest that you use them for a while and see how you like them.
