I have a near new Canon 5D Mark III with roughly 5,000 exposures and am looking to downgrade to a clean 6D plus cash for the difference in value.

andrew@lawyerfish.com

I have a long history on eBay as Lawman1967 and on Fred Miranda and GetDPI forums for buying and selling (mostly Leica).

I'm game, how much difference and what is your definition of clean?

I'm looking to get $500 plus a near new 6D, or a little more cash for a little less clean one.

My 5D is essentially brand-new, barely broken in and in original box with all originally bundled accessories. All I need with the 6D is a charger, I've got everything else, more concerned about the condition (optical, mechanical and electronic) of the camera itself.

I'll think about it. I believe my camera is pretty clean internally, I just had the sensor cleaned at the local Canon service center and had the grid display vew-finder thing installed. I bought mine used and don't have the original box and stuff. I do have a box but it's not the original. Sometimes I think I want a 5D III but sometimes I think I'll miss the Wi-Fi. I actually use the Wi-Fi quite a bit but then there have been times when the one cross type focus sensor has been frustrating. Hmmmm.

As long as the body is clean, works well, isn't worn out and has a battery charger it should do. I use my Leica kit a lot more than my Canon, so that is where I want to put most of my money.

Is your 5D111 good for birding along with low lighting which the 6D is great for. I have a 6D with shutter count 8,155. Bought from B&H in Dec2015 New. Love the 6D but need something faster for birding and was thinking of 7D11 or 80D. What is your camera best at.

Crop will be better for birds just for the extra reach, but among full-frame, 5D3 was about as good as it got in a reasonable size and price, at least until 5D4.

AF is a massive step-up from 6D.

How does the crop sensor provide better reach? As far as I know there is no increase in magnification, only less field of view.

There really is no comparison in focus points between the 5D III and the 6D. The 5D III has something like 40 cross type points compared to the 6D 1 cross type which is the one thing that has me considering the trade. As good as the 6D is in low light I have missed a few low light shots because the camera could get a fixed focus. I wasn't because it was really too dark because as I moved the center cross type point around and it was able to locate a point it focused quickly but by that time my ultimate shot was gone. This happened shooting foggy areas in landscape. I know, I should just turn off the auto focus and go manual in such situations.

6D's center point will focus in one stop less light than 5D3, but 5D3's center point otherwise is faster and more capable (dual cross type). 5D3 has 41 or 43 cross (don't remember) and 61 total.

Field of view is exactly the difference, and is what matters for reach as in how much of the frame a bird fills. A 400mm lens capturing a bird on a crop sensor will fill as much of the frame as the same bird at the same distance will on a 640mm lens for full-frame.

5D3 is a huge step-up from 6D in autofocus, but for birds I would go for crop. I shoot almost entirely portrait, event and travel, so for me full-frame is much better.

I too shoot mostly portrait, event and travel. My favorite travel lenses are my Canon 16-35 and Tamron 28-300. Those two make a package that is not too heavy or bulky and my FOV and reach ranges are awesome.

I'm trying to talk myself into this trade. It may take a day or two but if someone else jumps in and wants it right away don't worry about me. Besides I'm in South Korea and getting the postage worked out is going to be a hassle.

No worries, I'm not desperate.

My travel kit is usually a Leica with either 28 and 50mm lenses or just a 35mm lens. When I want reflex viewing and autofocus I usually take just one body (previously a 6D, more recently the 5D3) and have the 50/1.2 L on the body and the 24-70/4 in the bag. Again for traveling light its just the body and 35/1.4 L II.

I've always been a one-body, one-lens type when out and about, and even when traveling the "other" lens usually stays behind in the hotel. Honestly, I could do just fine the rest of my life (hopefully a very long time yet) with just a 50mm or a 35mm and not really miss much. Even for formal events, its usually just two bodies, one with each of those focal lengths and whatever available light (or better yet, available darkness) I can find.

In East Asia I find the 35mm a bit too long for travel even on the full frame; I'm usually down around 20-26mm and the 16mm comes in handy very often. The 16-35mm stays on the camera most of the time with the Tamron 28-300mm usually in a vest pocket.

I'm in Korean at least twice per year and even when I have my 24-70, I rarely go wider than 35 or longer than 50. I did take a 28 last year for one trip, but in Thailand last week I use my 50 more than anything else, though I did mount the 35 for an indoor event.
