I always take my laptop and an external drive to save my photos on a daily basis when traveling. There are a multitude of smaller laptops that will do a great job if size is an issue when traveling.

Ditto. That's what I did when I went to the Galapagos Islands. I didn't take a full sized laptop. Just one of those small 10 inch laptops with a small 512GB hard drive. Plenty of space for the 10,000 pictures I took.

I use EyeFi sd cards, with these cards you can send your photos as you take them to a tablet or phone and they are stored there until I need them.
My SD card is NEVER removed from my camera so it is very unlikely that I will loose it or damage it

I agree with therwol. Small computer, 2 identical WD hard drives (now 4TB each), download EVERY NIGHT to BOTH hard drives, reuse cards. One hard drive travels in my wife's carry on and the other in my carry on. Been doing this while travelling around the world for 15 years with no drive failures and no lost pictures.

Everything has mixed reviews. When the one-star reviews got to the 20% point, I look for a different product. This drive does seem to need some work before it's perfect. Two years ago I was away for a couple of weeks and brought a small Acer netbook with a 350GB drive. I also brought a compact external drive. Every day I copied the pictures to the external drive and the netbook. I also kept them on the SD cards till I got home.

Good article about wireless drives -

That's why I use those cards. They're not very speedy, but their effortless.

I use an iPad. That way at night I load it with the days pictures and quickly check them out . If I am not satisfied I can go back the next day with correction and retake.

I AGREE, SHARPSHOOTER, that anything can be lost whether it's a memory card or a small storage device. I've see many say not to trust ALL your pics to one large memory card as it can become defective. Instead use several smaller cards. Also, using one large card (left in the camera) won't help if the camera is lost or STOLEN. Treat the smaller cards like gold coins - they are valuable and to be protected.

N, if you're already losing SD cards, what will keep you from losing a different storage device? Now you've got two things to hang onto!! LoL
Why don't you just get a card big enough to hold all the shots you take on that vacation and NEVER take it out of the camera.
Maybe a carabiner to hook the device to your belt?!?!

Cameras are STOLEN or misplaced rather frequently... then you've lost all your pics.

I use an iPad for storage and then transfer when I get home. I also leave the pictures on the SD Card and not erase them. Funny story about getting a big enough card to store all of your pictures. Great idea but make sure it is compatible with your camera.

I had received a 64GB card to be used with my video equipment, Great invention! I shoot a marching band competition in the fall which is two or three cameras for about 12 hours with breaks. With the 64GB card I could use just 2 or 3 cards for the day for each camera. Decided this would be great to take with the DSLR - formatted a couple and were ready to go. Got to the Jefferson memorial in Washington DC and found out the cards formatted just fine but would not store a picture......... I had not tested it. Had to buy a $30 scenic picture SD card 8GB card with space on it to use until I could get to a store and buy my standard 32GB card.

Like others on this forum, I save my photos from the camera's memory card to my laptop each evening. I also upload the photos to a Dropbox file every evening so I have two copies - one local and one remote.

You don't need to bring a computer. This thing will let you back up your SD cards to something else: anything with a usb connector. For example large SD cards (128 or 256 GB) or a hard drive. It costs about $39.

You control it through your phone.

It is also a spare battery for your phone.

https://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-Versatile-Wireless-Portable-Companion/dp/B00T5XQE3U/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1482255459&sr=1-1&keywords=rav+hub

I see the writeup is a little unclear on how to use it to back up your SD cards. The author speaks to hooking the usb to a computer. But you can also stick an SD to usb holder in the usb connection. Or a hard drive.

Also it charges through the usb connection. So you need a compatible connector. The one for your camera battery might work.

I too, also take my laptop and an external drive with me. I also have a Western Digital Cloud at home and I upload a copy of all of my photos to the WD drive at home from where ever I am. All I need is a location with Wi-Fi so that I can send from my laptop to home. So every day, I spend a little time (usually evenings after I have downloaded to the external drive) and upload my daily shooting. This gets a copy back home and out of the mix of images. Basically it is an additional backup. When I get home, I upload the images from my external drive into Lightroom. If there is any issue with the external drive, then I can always get the images from my WD Cloud which is connected to my network with Ethernet. Once all of the images are verified from the external and or the WD Cloud and imported, I can delete them from the External and the Cloud to save the room. I also use the Cloud to create users locations so customers can see previews of their shoots and select photos if it is that type of shoot. I also delete those after they've been viewed and the finished products have been delivered.
By using this process, I have at least one copy of all of my shots that is back (hopefully safe) at home while I am on my trip. The worst I can lose is the shots that I have taken that day and haven't uploaded yet.

I bring a small laptop with me when I travel.
I also have multiple cards.
There have also been times I have used Dropbox to store pics while out on a vacation.
Did I mention that I'm paranoid?

l back up to a hard drive through a laptop but I also use a camera that records simultaneously to 2 cards (a CF and a SD). One of those cards is a high capacity card that stays with the camera through the vacation (or it reaches capacity). The other, smaller card, is removed every night, backed up to the laptop and placed in a SD card holder kept separate from both the laptop and the camera. Thus 3 copies with only one manipulation. If weight is an issue traveling I leave the laptop home and rely on the two memory cards only but at least they are kept separate.
