No, but a friend has the 7D and when I let him handle my 7DII for a while his reaction was "WOW".
To continue the car analogy, the 7D is a sports car for the highway, the 7DII is one souped up for more horse power and tuned for the race circuit.

Thanks robertjeri--I heard the 7dII was a faster and more powerful camera than the 7d and you and others have confirmed that.

Hello photographers,

I am thinking of upgrading my 7D to a 7D Mark II or the Canon 6D. Do any of you know all three cameras? Do you see a noticeable difference between the 7D and 7D mark II? Is the 6D much better than the 7D II for portraits and landscapes? (I can't afford the 5d camera series).

I photograph birds, landscapes, citiscapes, flowers, people, wildlife, portraits, do photojournalism--in other words, I am not limited to one area. I am currently deciding between the sigma 18-35 Art lens or one of the canon wide lenses (probably the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS) and since the sigma won't work on a full frame, I am figuring out ahead of time the lens that will match my future upgraded camera. The other lens in my future is the canon 100-400II.

Thanks for your input!

The 7D mark II is a star performer for wildlife and action - especially so when used with a Canon 100 - 400mm f4.5/5.6L IS II. The lens has a terrific minimum focusing distance which makes it great for close up shots. You do have to factor in the crop effect on your lenses for landscapes and street, though.

I moved from the 7D to the 7D2 and very happy with the transition. That with the 100-400 II is a great combination for action work - the fast focusssing is a tough combination to beat. I have no personal experience with the 6D but reports suggest that it is a great camera for low light work. Perhaps have you looked into getting a used 5D3? With the model 4 out, there are a lot of good buys on used bodies out there. Though for action work the 7D2 combo with the 100-400 works great, the 5D3 might be more generally useful for most circumstances and especially with wider lenses.

Some nice shots, Dan. I see you tend to underexpose. I do too. Adds a sharper more colorful look. I have the 7DII also. I like it.

I have the 7D II and am well pleased with it. I use it for landscape and wildlife photography. Its 10fps burst rate (even with RAW files) is very well-suited to BIF photos. I've also gotten good landscapes (which a FF would typically be better for). And, since I have a combination of EF-S and EF lenses, I decided to stick with a crop-frame camera when I upgraded. Most of the bird photos on my web site are with the 7dII, if you care to look.

Thank you robertjeri --did you ever use the 7d? Is the 7dII that much better?

I upgraded from the 7D to the 7DII, and I noticed a *huge* difference. There was much less noise in the images, for one. Having said that, I also bought a used 5DII at the same time - here at this very boutique! - and that has tended to be my go-to camera ever since. I wanted to try out a FF camera, and while I don't do big enlargements or anything, there is just something about that camera... Never used a 6D, but if you *do* want to try out FF, don't rule out the 5DII!

add the crop factor to the lens you selected if considering 7d

Dls, if the birds and wildlife you shoot are ever flying or running, I would not consider the 6D. The 6D is NOT an action canera nor does it pretend to be one.
The 6D would be better for landscapes though.
I would prefer the 7ll for portraits because of the numerous focus points over a larger area. I would put more importance on that aspect for portraits than the bigger sensor and the more mp of the 6D. Good luck

Right on the money, Sharpshooter. If you can only afford one camera, go for the 7D MII. It will do a great job with action shots and a respectable job with everything else. While the 6D will do a superior job with static shots, it just doesn't cut it at all for action. I have a 6D, but go to my 60D for action. I'm looking to add the 7D MII to my arsenal to expand my action capabilities.

The 6D vs 7D2 discussion has been pretty well covered, and I would agree with the suggestion to look at a used 5D3, which are selling in the $1500-$1600 range. Having owned a 7D and shot with a 7D2, I can agree that there is a very large difference, both in features and IQ - everything from faster frame rate, to superior autofocus to the flicker reduction feature. But the biggest obvious improvement is in noise at high ISO - it's worth 1-2 stops. I tried not to shoot much beyond ISO 1600 on the 7D, and found The 7D2 much improved. In that respect, the 6D or 5D3 is even better and one of the key reasons to consider FF. I use my 5D3 regularly to ISO 6400 and often to 10,000 or 12,800, and the noise is very manageable at that speed, which is invaluable when you need fast shutter speed and decent DOF in low light.

One lens that you may consider that is getting really good reviews is the Sigma 12-24 Art lens that just came out. It will work on both full and crop frame cameras. I have the 12-24 DG II which is a good lens, the Art is supposed to be a substantial improvement. As far as which camera, it is a tough call considering what you shoot, the 6D is a great camera, I have one and I also have a 7DII, I would definitely choose my 6D for people, landscape, street photography, architectural and so on, for Macro, Birds, and sports, I would definitely leave the 6D in the bag and use the 7D mkii.

This choice is often discussed and most agree that for landscapes, still life's, portraits, and studio work the 6D is a good choice. Everyone agrees that for birds & wildlife, sports, and action the 7Dii is THE choice.

My suggestion is that you pick up the two cameras. The 7Dii feels like a tank and the 6D feels like a toy. They are not in the same league. If you are an active outdoor shooter and need a rugged, water-sealed body, the choice is clear.

You can't really compare the 6D and 7D II's. They are different animals. That said, I'm sure you will be happy with the 7D II. It's a much improved body over the old 7D. I had the 7D too and now have the 7D II. The sensor is better, more megapixels, much better focus system, more focal points, ( 65 all cross-type AF points for high precision AF at remarkable speed), larger buffer, 10 fps bursts, and autofocus tracking while doing video.

I own a 6D and owned a 7D II as well. However, I traded the 7D II for a Sony A7R. My primary interest is astrophotography and the 6D is a very low noise camera which makes it great for astro imaging. The 7D II was disappointingly noisier. The A7R is also a low noise camera. However, if I were a sports or nature photographer, the 7D II would be a much better camera in most circumstances. For landscapes, the 6D is very capable.

So it comes down to what you intend to use it for. The 6D would reign supreme at night but the 7D II would be much better shooting wildlife or sports action.

Thank you, WetCoaster. I was wondering about astrophotography and was looking up images last night comparing the two. It did seem the 60d surpassed the 7dII in this area.
