I have been a fan of MT shooter for quite some time. Knows his business and is always on point.

No, unfortunately. Who gets to decide who the idiots are anyway?

Oh, oh, oh, are you suggesting that be you?
(Please let me put on my hip boots first...)

Why does anyone need to decide that for all to see anyway? Do you feel nobody here is intelligent enough to form their own opinions?

C'mon folks, let's just stay on topic and try to tolerate each other as human beings that have occasional flaws?
Let's have intelligent discussions about photography and not each other!

Refurbished gear comes from several sources. Dealer demos, trade show demos, and customer returns being the most common. (How many of you have bought items to "evaluate" and then returned them?)
All these items get checked by a service technician for appearance and function, any glaring or obvious issues are corrected and the item is removed with proper accessories and then made available as refurbished products. Firmware updates are often, but not always installed.
Contrary to some opinions these items are NOT fully or rigorously examined and issues can be missed if a specific error or issue was not detailed in the return package. But overall refurbished items do have a better record of reliability than assembly line items which only receive random spot check inspections. Pro level gear is different as each body and lens receives a number of assembly inspections during the manufacturing process.
Refurbished are, in general, a good way to save some money over brand new. Canon provides the same one year warranty as they have on their new gear while other manufacturers limit their return to 90 day warranties. But some dealers will extend that 90 days to a full year at no extra cost.
Do keep in mind that this info ONLY relates to "Factory Refurbished" items, anything sold as "seller refurbished" is meaningless and simply states all you are getting is a used product with no verifiable warranty.
So there you go, let's the trolls descend on me as they will.
Since you ask, I will answer. br Refurbished gear ... (show quote)

Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

I would think the answer to the question should be obvious except to the mentally challenged.

An excellent response, and I'm certainly not qualified to comment on who the idiots may be.

That's possibly why I sometimes ask questions.

If you read through this thread, which was a good question, and answered well by MT, you will see how it went downhill, a while before I joined in. You will also see when MT started calling certain people trolls, a characteristic that he sometimes exhibits himself.

The issue with MT is that he is seldom willing to address a situation where he is in fact incorrect. Should we just ignore that or should we let misinformation be proliferated without question?

He is correct much of the time, but not always. Yet when questioned or challenged he tends to respond badly. He is not the voice of God.

Mostly he just tries to be dismissive of questions or fails to respond if reasonably challenged, especially with factual information.

What is actually wrong with contesting inaccurate information on what is essentially a discussion board?

Sure I lit into MT about his posting style, unfortunately I haven't discovered a way to get him to deal with legitimate questions in a reasonable manner.

In two recent purchase attempts for a refurbished Nikon D750 resulted as follows: The first purchase made directly from the Nikonusa website resulted in a dead on arrival D750 body. The second purchase from B&H resulted in a serial number in need of an advisory service. Both bodies showed signs of handling and the working unit from B&H had just over 9,000 shutter clicks. Both units arrived in a white box without the software CD but did included a 99 cent shoulder strap, in place of the original.

In my opinion, the term refurbished is now rather vague.

Wow Tspan! Thanks for that answer. I OTOH, have never been unhappy purchasing refurbished. An Olympus camera purchased from Oly actually looked brand new, like it had never been touched (which led me to the opinion that sometimes maufacturers sell older models out as refurbished to not interfere with new purchases that might still be on dealers shelves). An Amazon purchased 90mm Tamron macro came in a white box, but worked like new. A Canon A650 purchased refurbished from Canon came in a new box, apparently opened, but everything worked perfectly.
After reading your response, I guess it does seem that results can be hit or miss.
Perhaps I have been lucky because I usually wait before the "dust settles" in terms of manufacturers fixing the "first cameras out the door" issues?
It takes me a while anyway to read all the user reviews before actually hitting the "buy" button.

I would just say this to all of you who have questions about factory refurbs. Do like I did when I bought my refurbished Canon 80d last week from the Canon Store, I called a tech guy at Canon and asked him what they did to refurbish a camera, and if the shutter clicks are reset to zero. His response was that the refurbs they sell are brand new and are mostly returns from retailers that have been on the shelf too long. They have never been in a customer's hand so there is no need to reset the shutter count. Each returned camera or lens is checked for appearance, visible damage and also tested for functionality (Mine had zero clicks). I've owned five different Canons over the years and have had no problems, ever. Thus I do trust their work and their employees to provide the best possible advice and service. I can only speak to my experience, so your mileage may vary under different circumstances.

Yes, click on their name and you are given the option to click on "ignore". I did this with four different individuals today who I finally decided aren't worth the bother. Most are highly active in "The Attic" posts.

I also own multiple refurbs from Canon and Nikon without any problems. For me, the key is whether they are refurbished by authorized sources.

"If you read through this thread, which was a good question, and answered well by MT, you will see how it went downhill, a while before I joined in, ..."

I have not been a member as long as others. I love and appreciate this forum. However, I abhor the "battles among the "experts". Is there a reasonable explanation why the battles must continue. For the few who cannot resist engaging, would you please convey those messages using a PM? Why must those conversations be public? Does it enhance UHH? Does it add to the quality of information? Can you stop and reflect? Is there some degree of conscientiousness that will allow you to see the negative affect it has on the majority of subscribers? Can you see how a new subscriber or visitor views these battles? What does it contribute? You all seem very intelligent. Do you have the courage to acknowledge your participation? Do you have the courage to change?

Thank you for considering my comments/questions.
Mark

thanks for taking the Time to ask Jerry and thank you too MT for the answer. It amazes me how many answers on here start out with " I dont know but" as the begin to tell someone who does what they should of said or done. Sorry, I did not intend to add more fuel but sometimes it just is what it is.

No wonder MT doesn't participate on the Hog as much as he used to. Ask him a question, he gives a good answer, and it's like he's the pheasant during pheasant season with a row of hunters with shotguns all aimed at him.

Remember when it used to be a nice group having morning coffee, MT?
