I'm buying a new computer before Christmas. I've decided upon the make, model, etc, etc. Except for one thing. There are two versions of this computer. One has 24gb of ram and the other has 64. It costs $300 more to get the 64gb model. This computer will be used for image processing, web surfing, emails, and that's about it. No gaming. Do I need the extra ram and, more importantly, will it make a considerable difference in image processing? My cameras are Nikons D3, D800, and DF, if it matters.

Even 24gb is overkill. After 16gb, the differences become marginal. Putting caching and software on an ssd would make a far greater difference, as would a good video card. I can't imagine a desktop with 64gb for the uses you specified.

WOW! You guys are amazing. I never expected to get this much response. Thanks to each of you for your time and effort. I have contacted my local computer guys and will be purchasing a custom built machine sometimes after Christmas. Specifics are not "etched in stone" at present but right know it looks like this: Intel i7, Asus motherboard, 512, maybe 800, gb Samsung SSD, WD RE 2tb Hd, liquid cooling system, 800watt power supply, and 4gb graphics, and Windows 10 Pro. This may be overkill, I don't know.

Agreed. I just upgraded from 16 GB to 32 GB. A slight difference with PS & LR. I can return it within 30 days to Amazon.
I have the 4 x 4GB on sale at eBay.

Sounds terrific. Custom built is always better. It's close to my system (i7 3rd generation - Intel Board & Processor) - but mine is 5 years old with a new PSU, GPU, 1TB Samsung SSD and recent upgrade to 32 GB RAM.
You are going to love it. I may have to buy new shocks to protect me from your power!!

At those Gb numbers might you be referring to hard drive or some solid state mass storage.

Thanks guys for your prompt responses. I'm having a hard time deciding whether to go with a ready built machine from Dell or have one built to my specifications. I'm now starting to lean toward the latter because it seems that the ready built ones each have something that is not the most efficient for image editing.

Suggest you look into custom built. Get what you need and want, nothing you don't.
You know your budget so...
16 to 32 RAM, 8 plus gig video card, 1TB SSD drive are my picks for fast image processing. Don't forget backup drives.

I rebuilt my Pentium4 with a $35 motherboard from ebay and am running 2 gig of ram with dual core 3Ghz processor.
I'm not a gamer and do very little video streaming.
My setup works just fine for still pick photos.

Yep. With those cameras I would personally spring for the extra ram. Your money, your life. You decide.

Having mucho ram isn't a big plus if you don't have a great video card and monitor. Just out of curiosity, what processor will you be using?
