Since I was little and read all the Heidi books I have always wanted to go to Switzerland. This was the part of the trip I was most excited about as we were to ride a train to the top of the mountains, where they said on a clear day you can see for 200 miles! WOW well as we arrived I told myself I was not going to let a day of bad weather spoil it for me....Drizzle, fog, and grey skys with no mountains in sight. We were in the beautiful little town of Lucern, with a lovely bridge lined with flowers connecting the two parts of the city almost right out our hotel door. We had a boat ride across the lake to where we got on one of the worlds steepest train rides to the top-- where we could hardly see 20 feet rather than 200 miles! Rode a gondola back down the mountain, spent the evening wandering around town and had a wonderful meal of cheese fondue and a specialty the guide reccomended of fried potatoes, with bacon and cheese on top and an egg. Went well with the beer! YUM YUM
Since I was little and read all the Heidi books I ... (show quote)

Great photos. I rung in the year 1980 in Switzerland and returned a couple years later, primarily for the skiing. We made our way slowly from Zurich to Geneva then took a bus to the south of France. Your chalets on the mountainside brought back memories for me. Oh, and yes, the beer.

Another fabulous set! I liked the next to last one the best. It was nice of that little sail boat to place itself in the space where the two mountains separate. The lion monument honors the members of the Swiss Guard at the royal palace who were killed during the French Revolution.

Great travel photos of an apparently beautiful area. I tried to pick a favorite, but you had too many to do that.

Just went back to check the facts about the Lion Monument. was afraid y memory was wrong. The Swiss Guard was defending the Tuileries Palace where the royal family was living. In 1792 a mob stormed the palace. The guard ran out of ammunition and most of them were slaughtered. Some were later guillotined. The monument was carved out of the rock face in the 1820's.

I was usually busy snapping photos while I was listening

We traveled to Lucerne toooo many years ago and visited the same sites and sights.
There is a song From Lucerne to Weggis Town. We took a short boat ride to Weggis
where we had cheese fondue and watched a folk show. I did not realize how steep that
funicular ride to Mt. Pilatus is until I saw a side view of the track. We also took a gondola
down.
Thanks for taking me back.

Thank you for sharing-brought back memories of a trip I took 26 years ago with my Mom-who is now 93! We loved the trip-especially Switzerland.
