In need of a back up camera.

My 60D had developed an intermittent problem with the multi controller. I have problems changing menu items.
The problem started one humid day when a drop of sweat dropped of my forehead and bulls eyed the switch in question. Sealing must not be very good.

Need to send the camera off for repair and would like to purchase a used camera body as a backup while the repair is taking place. Same thing happened years ago when the shutter curtain failed on my Canon A1. I purchased a used AE1 for backup. I ended up using the AE1 almost as much as the A1 after that.

My only problem with the 60D is the lack of the lens focus adjust feature. It would be nice to find a camera with that feature.

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced used camera body to serve this purpose.

Ideas?

Rather than buying a backup camera, maybe look for a replacement with the updated features that appeal to you, and use the 60d as your backup.

That is a possibility. Although money is a little short just now.

My Sony has an electronic viewfinder that allows you to zoom in to focus. It is several years old and will probably run at about £350 £400 as a second user . Lens adapter with electronic connection is available to fit Canon. You never know - you might like it!!!!

Now that is a possibility. Sony seems to make a great camera. Which Sony do you have?

I see the SLT 65 is listed on your information line.

What is your experience with Canon lenses on the Sony. Do you loose anything. Loose an F stop like the Canon FD to EF adaptors. How does the auto focus work. ?

Don't bother changing systems. You already said you have limited funds. Chasing another brand is not a way to address that limitation. The sensor in the 60D is the same as the 7D. If you don't buy another 60D or upgrade to a new model, look at the used pricing for the 7D where a whole lot camera can be had at a relatively unbelievable discount.

That is a good suggestion. You can pick up nice used 7Ds for $400-$500, and having owned one, I can tell you it's a solid advanced amateur/pro grade body that will deliver excellent images. Very solid build (much more rugged that your 60D), good AF and decent fps - the only real limitation being noise at very high ISOs. If no real need for a backup, you could sell the 60D for parts and buy a 7D for not much more than fixing the 60D.

My idea is to purchase another 60D or a camera very similar to in with respect to menus, and capabilities. That way you don't have to keep track of which camera you are using. Additionally all accessories will work exactly the same. Having two distinctly different cameras can lead to issues if you are shooting sometime important.

While you can usually find some decent refurbished or used cameras on Adorama, B&H, KEH and others, you might want to consider buying a new camera and demoting your current great camera to your backup. I have a D610 as my "primary" and a D7100 as my "backup" but use both to each's advantage (D610 for wide to normal and D7100 for normal to long shots). And I have an old D70s that is for my wife's use.

I like having two cameras with the same or very similar controls. If I go out shooting with a tele on one and a W/A on the other, I like the controls to be the same.

Would a 5D MkII suit your needs for this ? I have one with a shutter count of approx. 2800 w/grip if you'd be interested.

I had the same problem with my 60D ......eventually I dried it out and it began working again - but it took some time ( couple months) So, I got a nice used 50D - has focus cal and is 1 FPS faster but no articulating screen.

I think if you travel with your camera a lot, a backup camera, or camera body, makes a lot of sense. You might want to consider a good Bridge camera just for such a purpose.

A 7D has the features and used are reasonable, will use all your lenses and accessories and has good IQ. Also has a faster frame rate I believe.
