You need to choose Copy as DNG in the Import module. DNG is Adobe's open source RAW format.

NOT TRUE! You can edit RAW format files if you choose Add or Copy.

True, you can edit in your cameras native raw format i.e. NEF for Nikon or you can transfer to DNG if you like. There are advantages and disadvantages both ways. but either will work.

I think what you really want to know is how to import and see both the raw AND jpeg files in your catalog but you're only seeing the raw files, right? To fix that go to Edit/Preferences/General from menu at top left corner of your screen. Once in the General box look for "Treat jpeg files next to raw files as separate photos". Then you'll see both in your library module. To deal with them separately, at the bottom of your grid mode click on SORT and select sort by file type. This will 'gang' the raw files separately from the jpegs.
Enjoy!

In this instance, is this necessary?

People have given you very good answers here. However, they do not ask a simple question. Why shoot both jpg and raw? I shoot both only when traveling because I do not want to take time "touching" the raws and want to show people back home what I am doing.

When you shoot both jpg and raw, you simply make the "housekeeping" harder. You have twice as many files to manage and to confuse you. Furthermore, you can export the raw as a jpg and with appropriate editing, have something better than the jpg from the camera. And, as you will learn, raws are so much more forgiving of exposure problems than jpgs.

If you want more help, I suggest that you post in the post-processing forum.

Good luck.

The answer from JTann is the best response to your question.

You do NOT need to choose .dng. When I import from my memory card, the RAW files show up with the extension indicating RAW - for Nikon it is .NEF.

Is there a particular reason you are taking both RAW and .jpg? I started out with .jpg because the early PS Elements I was using did not recognize RAW from my camera. Then I got LR, and started shooting in both RAW and .jpg because I was unsure about RAW. But RAW is the best format, contains more information than .jpg, and makes lossless editing possible. You can always generate a .jpg from the RAW file when needed for sharing.

"how do i edit raw in lightroom?"
If you are seeing the RAW file in LR then you can edit it there.
Just select an image and click on 'Develop' in the upper right corner.

The Develop Module in LR is the same engine as Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop.

Lightroom's primary function is a RAW editor and batch RAW converter. So all you need to do is choose the file you want to process, then work on it in the Develop module, then Export it and save it as whatever type of file you wish... or pass it off to other programs for further post-processing work.

As someone else already responded, no you absolutely DON'T need to convert your camera's native RAW file to a DNG. (in fact, . besides that it adds an extra step, there are some good reasons not to do convert ot DNG... Google it, if interested.)

It sounds as if you are new to Lightroom (since this was a pretty basic question). I'd strongly suggest you get one of the books about Lightroom... Scott Kelby's or Tony Northrup's, etc. Just search for "Lightroom 6" in "books" on Amazon and you should find lots of options. Check out the buyer reviews to see which books people are finding the most helpful.

A book about Lightroom will make your life a whole heck of a lot easier! It's a moderately complex program that can do a lot of things. It's going to be very frustrating just diving in and trying to use it without some guidance, and it's way too much to try to learn from forum questions and answers or from videos on Youtube (though both those can be helpful for some specific problems or techniques).

Julieann Kost on tv.adobe.com is probably the best of them all. Certainly, the place to start at.
