Stop down to f8 and move ISO up to 3200 and increase shutter speed.
Capturing the dynamic range of the scene at that time of day is beyond what a normal camera is capable of rendering without:
1. multiple exposures and blending in post-processing
2. adding light, which, based on posts in other sections, a lot of people on this site are afraid of doing.
See twowindsbear's post for what is, in my opinion, the best solution without resorting to lighitng it up like a movie set.
I like the idea of making it an outing and trying out our ideas.
We haven't heard from the original poster again, have we?
Thanks all. I'll give your suggestions a try and repost

Yep - - it's the exposure. I also think the white balance is off quite a bit - would be better if you had the RAW data to recompose. And finally - recommend auto-bracketing at
+2eV, then running the three shots judiciously through Photomatix (HDR) - free to try (with watermarking) - reasonable to buy.
