Just got a D7100 and am wondering what is the best SD card to use.
I use sandisk extreme pro with a 95w and 85 r, they are a a little pricey but never had any problems and are quite fast, which is a good thing if doing fast repeat shooting, like following sports, birds, horses etc.
The above suggested SanDisk SD card is an
excellent, but pricey, at about $22 each. I just ordered from B&H, a twin pack Lexar Professional, 32gb, 633X, UH-1, 95 MB/s for $18. First time on this card type for me. Price was right for me though. Reviews were good too.
Sandisk, Lexar are fine. Just get the fastest rated transfer speed you can.
If you look in your instructions book you will notice a set of cards recommended by Nikon.
I agree that you should buy one with a fast upload and download rate that will fit your needs.

I have used nothing but Sand Disk SD cards on my Nikon digital cameras and some are almost ten years ok=ld and still working as good as the day I bought them. Not one has failed on me yet.
If you are interested in using its BURST mode, then get an SD card that has a WRITE speed as close to 90MB/s as possible. All SD cards are marked with their READ speed only . . not their WRITE speed. I can't emphasize enough that WRITE speed is what determining the cards impact on your camera's operation.
READ speed only impacts how fast the card will dump its contents to your computer. READ speed is always faster than WRITE speed. So you will have to go to the supplier or manufacturer's web site to find it. Both B&H and Adorama will list the card's advertised WRITE speed.
Notice that I said advertised WRITE speed. Virtually none of the card suppler's cards will meet their advertised speeds. So more research is indicated on the web to see what others have been able to "measure" on the subject.
Sounds like a lot of effort to just buy a memory card? Well, it matters a lot when you are pushing your camera to its limits and that is very easy to do with your D7100 as its memory buffer is very limited when being used with fast action.
Congrats on your new camera. I love mine. Sands, lear, as long as it is high speed.

Check the manual to see what it can use. It's probably not worthwhile paying a lot to get high speed you don't need. if you don't habitually shoot continuous high speed raw, a less than "the fastest" card will be fine. I use mostly 32GB cards, and sometimes 64, but I've never come close to filling them.

I use a Sandisk Extreme Pro 280 mb/s in mine. Works like a charm, out performs all the others I've used. And yes it's "Pricey" but worth it to me the write speed is incredibly quick. I shoot Landscape, Wildlife & Bird photos

At 280MB/s you just might be using a Compact Flash card and not an SD. . . or you are now using the new Nikon D500 and its newer SD derivative card. . . and that card will not be able to achieve anywhere near that speed in the much older D7100 or any other camera at this time.
As for advertised speeds, I've run several of my cards on my Mac to test their Read/Write speeds. The Sandisk extreme pro that I use is rated at 95 and 90 Read/Write while it tested at 63 and 57 using the highest speed attainable with the tests at hand. Now that is what I call off the mark! SandDisk isn't alone. From What I've seen posted on line, Sony may be the only supplier that seems to achieve what they advertise . . . . . check for yourselves if speed is important to your photography.

I use a PNY 32GB Elite Performance SD card in my D7100. It has a read speed of 95mb/sec and a write speed of 30 mb/sec. I've used it for a couple of years without problems. It can be purchased for $11.99 from B & H.
By the way, I would disagree with the advice to select a card based on Nikon recommendations from the time of original design. That list is bound to include older products that have been replaced with newer better performing cards. To my knowledge, Nikon does not update their recommendations.
I could not get a 64gb card to work in my d7100 and find that the 32gb cards mentioned above are large enough and fast enough.
SanDisk is releasing a 512gb SD card for 4K Video and continual RAW shooters. Price $310 each. Now that is some memory. Just make sure when you remove it from your camera, you're on a flat floor or ground. Otherwise?
