Nice captures. You should try photoshopping the tethers out of the shots. Then they would really look like they're flying!

I think that is going to hurt when they hit the water. Great shots!

Great action shots Brent! I always look forward to your posts. Your surfing experience pays off in capturing just the right moment to hit the shutter release. Thanks for posting.

Thank you Goober for all the nice things you have said about these two photos. You are so very right about my surfing experience paying off pertaining to knowing the exact moment to hit the shutter release. With the modern DSLR cameras it also helps being able to shoot multiple frames per second. I delete a lot of photos but it helps increase the chance of a good shot along the way!

Great shots. Perfect timing. Fails are always more interesting to the viewer when it comes to surfing.

Well grillmaster, I'm not so sure if I agree with you about the fails being more interesting than the other surfing photos to the viewer or not, (at least not to me) but the fails do have some very interesting visual impact that is for sure! Thanks for the "Great shots. Perfect timing." comments about the photos, I appreciate it.

These are great, Brent. But I'll show my ignorance of surfing here by asking some questions. Did they do this deliberately? Or were these accidental disengagements? Is the cord tying them to their board so they don't lose it? Do they come down in the water, or actually come back down onto their board? (If so, that would be truly an acrobatic action!)

It's ok to show your ignorance AzPicLady.......you live in Arizona! Not to much surf going on there! You have a great excuse! To answer your questions:
1. Yes, they do it deliberately.......it's called "kicking out". Sometimes they can exit the wave sooner and not go "flying". These two guys are flying because they waited till the last possible moment to kick out.
2. They were not accidental.
3. Yes, the cord attached to their ankle is called a "surf leash" and it's so if they loose their board, they don't have to swim all the way to the beach to retrieve their board.
4. The surfers usually try to stay as far away from their boards for safety reasons while "kicking out", but sometimes they purposely launch themselves with their board in the air and try to land it again and keep surfing. In contests, that usually scores big points.
5. The pro surfers have perfected launching themselves with their boards and then landing back on the wave again. They are very skilled and make an acrobatic action like that appear very easy, but it's very difficult. It's like any good athlete in their particular sport, they make it look easy, but it's really years of perfecting what they do.
