I went to the dentist with a sore tooth today. Again, I have the typical choice: root canal or extraction. Two years ago, I went with the extraction because it was not only cheaper, but it was the rearmost tooth. This time, it's between two other teeth, so it will leave a large empty space. At 72 years of age, it's hard justifying $2,000 for one tooth, but having that large empty space isn't appealing, either. I could buy a fairly decent lens with that money.

Pull the tooth and buy the new lens a sweet one too. I have an empty space and you quickly adjust to it; no big deal. The lens will serve you for the rest your life.

I'll probably be selling lenses to pay for the work.

Ask the surgeon how long the root filled tooth is likely to last, and what further treatment it will require.
Then make up your mind.

If I had known about my husband's "soft" teeth when we married, I'd have settled for a horse. (for some reason people always check the teeth of a horse, but never another person) But, he's 73 and still a handsome man. (meaning-he still has hair, not gray and not dyed) I'm pretty sure I'm glad I made the investment in his teeth) Now, if we can both get our golf handicaps back down to where they were 20 years ago, life would be pretty good.

Jerry-get rid of the bad teeth and get a partial bridge replacement. You'll never have any problem with those teeth again. No matter what, you will spend the same money, maybe more. Then go buy yourself a new lens because you had on your big boy pants and didn't cry. Good luck!

I practiced pediatric dentistry for 30+ years in my private office, now semi-retired I work locum tenens. About the only experience I have with your type of problem is my own situation. First, what is the problem with the tooth? Does it have a large cavity, or an old large restoration, or a periodontal (gum) problem, or has the tooth given up to years of service and split, or cracked. If it has an old restoration, is it a gold restoration, silver restoration, or composite (plastic)? These are the things I would look at before deciding how to treat your situation. In my case, I had two upper molars, one on each side, that had cracked vertically, involving the root. I had root canal therapy on the first, and it failed after several years. I had a implant placed with a crown and it is vey acceptable. Several years later the other molar had the same problem, and I consulted a different endodontist about root canal therapy. He did not think this one would be treatable, so I had another extraction and implant placed. I am very happy with the implants, but it is not inexpensive. If you happen to have a copy of your X-ray, I would be happy to look at it and give you my opinion. If you are able to copy it on your computer, please send me a PM. Good luck.

Aren't implants not only expensive, but also painful? More painful than an extraction or root canal?

Sorry to hear that. I'd still just have it pulled. Root canals can be very painful and sometimes do not work and the dentist gives no guarantee or refunds either. The tooth I lost was because the dentist that did the root canal on it years ago didn't do it right; it almost killed me from an infection going to the brain. An oral surgeon had to pull it in emergency surgery and he did during his lunch hour to fit me in; that's how serious it was.

A nurse who had one done talked me out of an implant. Lots of pain and lots of time.

I'm going for a cleaning and X-rays tomorrow, and I hope to discuss it with someone.

This is an interesting article despite being over 4 years old. My last tooth was pulled.

Our dental insurance helps cover root canals and crowns, it won't pay for a new lens. :-)
