Regarding a D500. I have one. I like it but you will need XQD cards, for full capability and an XQD card reader. That's another $100 bucks or so.

I just bought a like new D300 2 months ago in a private sale with a shutter count of 1255 and paid $325. It came with all of the accessories new strap, user guides, charger, etc. plus 3 extra batteries, an additional charger, 3 - 8GB SanDisk Extreme Pro Compact Flash Cards, and a nice Tamrac System/8 shoulder bag. I think I got a real good deal. I don't think you will have any trouble selling that camera. I was looking at ebay at the time and the D300's were all going for $300-$375 and the nicer packages all had quite a few buyers watching. I'd keep all of the lenses and see how you like them on the new D7200, get rid of the ones that don't perform as well as they did on the D300 don't forget you have a sensor that has twice the resolution as the D300 has. (24.2mp vs 12.3mp). You'll love the D7200.

Once you go to the XQD slot and start using the XQD you will never go back.

Do you shoot video?

I have 2 cameras that take XQD, and have never considered them as a major benefit. I used my D4s a couple of times with only a CF card installed and shot as always. I didn't notice anything slowing me down.

What have you noticed first hand that makes them earn your high praise?

Thanks for the reply.

I use 64GB Lexar 2933x. The download is pretty quick using the Lexar adapter in a USB 3.0 port. But I usually plug them in and do something else, so I never really paid a whole lot of attention. So, I really would have missed the advantage there if you hadn't mentioned it.

I take it from your answer that, like me, you don't notice anything worth mentioning when shooting.

The D500 is more expensive than the D7200, but it has the Xpeed5 proccessor of the D5 and the same magnificent focusing system of the D5. If you shoot things that move....go with the D500. If not, save your money and go with another outstanding DSLR, the D7200.

So I echo the D500 comparison as the button layout is the same. But consider keeping the d300 as a backup camera. I still have mine and use it from time to time with a Nikon 10-24DX lens on it. Just a suggestion.

Having a second camera is def. a good idea. I do the same thing with my D7000, but I have the Tamron 10-24mm. On vacation when I put my 28-300mm on my D800 I never have to change lenses. However, the 24-70mm is such a great lens, it's on perhaps more than the 28-300.

All great input. It may seem inconsequential to some, but the attached flash on the D7200 is one difference i favor. I do not take a lot of action shots so that does not sway me towards the D500, but the price difference is somewhat important since photography is an important hobby, but not my profession. So much to consider though.

I agree. While I use a Speedlight when I know I need a flash, there are times when a little fill light is needed, and the flash on the D7200 comes in handy. I thought about the D500 when I bought my D7200 and since I am a hobby photographer I opted for the D7200 at half the price of the D500. Just think, for the same money as the D500 you can have a D7200 and a very nice 24-70 lens such as the Tokina 24-70 2.8, which is by far and away my favorite lens.

I think it was a big mistake not putting a flash on the D500. I use it on my D800 for fill all the time, too. No use putting on the SB910 for a shot of the grandkid at the table.

I do use the flash on the D7200 for fill on occasion. I guess if the reason for omitting the flash on the D500 was for better weather sealing it does make sense. My D1X and D2Xs, back when I was young and foolish, more than once got doused with salt water, hit with sand, and were caked with ice and slush with no ill effects.

Now that I'm old and foolish I might put myself and my gear in those same situations. I would probably leave the D7200 at home.

I believe another of the advantages of the XQD card on the shooting side is that it is recommended for 4K and 6K, etc. video. Nikon always looks forward to a degree.
