Anyone have experience with this manual focus lens. I see them real cheap are they any good?
I used to have one (300mm f2.8 AI-S) but it was stolen (with all the rest of my stuff) in 1994, and I never replaced it. It was an amazing lens, though it was not the “ED” version. I would l love to have another one. A bit difficult for some to handhold, but I was able to do it, down to 1/30 second.

The 4.5 ED IF is the one to have ..... unless you want to carry the 2.8 one .
I would’ve liked to have had that one, but it was way too pricey for me at the time. So I had to get the “regular” one. Loved it. Until it was stolen.

I'm not sure where the subject of the 75/300 came in. If I had options, it would be between the 300mm f4 and the 200-500mm.
Sorry, slip of the mouse or senior moment, take you pick. Thought I was replying to Royce.

Thanks for your input been hearing lots of good things about this lens. My stuff was stolen too. Nikon 7200, 35mm, 70-300mm, 18-55mm, lots of misc. accessories, camera backpack and tripod. A real drag. Luckily all insured -$500 deductible. So now trying to build up my gear with limited budget. Was lucky at least my 3200 and 75-300 was with my wife.

It took me a long time to start putting my “kit” together, long story, won’t bore anyone. Got a refurb D7100 on Amazon. 50mm f1.4 and 105mm f2.5 (two of the lenses I had before) but now I’m looking at a nice zoom or a couple of primes. I had my eye on the 80-200mm f2.8 only because of its reputation for being a great lens and built like a tank. However, I’d also like something to cover the wide end, but then I’ve also read that if the zoom range is TOO wide that it won’t be as good as something with a shorter range. I’ve never had a zoom before, and I know that primes are (generally) better, but changing lenses can be a PIA, sometimes.
I’m sure that the 18-300 DX or 28-300 FX would be just fine for what I need it for. The 18-140 doesn’t give me enough on the long end and I’ve heard mixed reviews on the 18-200.
Lastly, is the variable aperture on these zooms that much of an issue? 98% of everything I’d be doing would be daytime and mostly in bright sunlight or, at worst, slightly overcast days.
