I own a 300-mm f/4.5 H (pre AI) purchased new in 1972. With proper care, optics are quite good, but all lenses are susceptible to mold, etc. Careful visual inspection is suggested before purchase.
Read about 300-mm history here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/300ais.htm

Royce,

I have a Nikkor 300mm f4.5 ai lens that I use on my D7100 and love it. Attached is an image taken with it combined with a 1.4 converter (630mm on a dx camera). the settings were f8.0, 1/100s, and iso 1250.

I have two. One fixed one zoom, love them both.

I used this lens with a D300s and D700. Bought for $225 and sold for $200. Bulletproof and great optics. The coatings on newer lenses render better contrast but PP can solve that. Buy from a reliable source like KEH and you won't be sorry.

The 4.5 ED IF is the one to have ..... unless you want to carry the 2.8 one .

The quality will be good but manual focus will make photographing moving objects difficult(birds in flight, etc).

Swamp Gator was one of our finest contributors until a couple of years ago. Pull him up and go to his website and you'll see why. He shoots Canon, but he likes the combination of a 300mm f4 with a 1.4x. Check his photos and you'll see why that combo is so great.

Thanks guys for your input. I have a old 75-300 push pull zoom with manual focus that is pretty good. Just looking for something sharper without breaking the bank. Don't mind at all using manual focus Thinking to get one of the 300mm Ais and add a 1.4 converter to it.

Granted, the 75/300 is a little softer that my 300, but in most cases, you have to pixel peep to see the difference as long as you have what you want in focus. It does get a little tricky to focus at 300 with my D800, but not so much with the 610 or D50. But a darn good lens.

I'm not sure where the subject of the 75/300 came in. If I had options, it would be between the 300mm f4 and the 200-500mm.

Royce,

I was about 20ft away. The teleconverter was a Kenko Pro 300. Lens is even sharper without the teleconverter. Also, keep in mind that the ISO was 1250. The lens is built like a tank and has a tripod mount. I purchased it from KEH for a little more then $100.00. It was 8 cosmetically and 10 optically. Even though it is manual focus it works well with the focus indicator on my 7100.

What brand, if I may ask?
All of the 300mm Nikkor primes produce fine image quality, the ED models are the best.
