I use the Kindle software on my Samsung tablet. Great color, resolution, etc.

Actually, it's the actual devise that will determine if it's only black & white or color when reading books and magazines at this time.

The developers haven't developed e-ink to the point where it is or acceptable yet. The colors are still muted instead of clean and crisp.

E-ink readers are those that you can read out in bright sunlight, such as at the pool or on the beach.

The rest of the electronic readers are back lit, such as your phones or laptop computers, making them difficult to read in brightly lit areas, or outside. Even overcast skies will reflect on the screens, unless held at an angle away from the sky. Been there, done that while waiting for my forensic science class to gather at an outside crime scene set-up one evening with an overcast sky overhead.

I use the Kindle App mostly on my Samsung Galaxy 9.7 Tablet, but also on Galaxy 7 phone, and HP laptop, and love it for instructional books (Photography,Cooking, Fishing etc.) And actually found I use the tablet alot more than the laptop. BUT when I want to read for pleasure, nothing beats a paper book🤓

The Kindle Fire 7 which I recently inherited has excellent color, and in addition to books, movies, music, etc., it will play back my photos while I am on trips by just inserting a micro SDHC. Rendition at least as good as my monitor. Though comparatively small, far superior to viewing on the camera. It has only 16GB of memory, but will accept any micro SDHC and so can be upgraded. There is a cord, which I have not yet obtained, that I believe will allow downloads directly from the camera.
Another opportunity, and this for any Kindle, is to download camera instruction manuals. I have all of them on my Kindle which saves weight and space travelling.
Since I always bring a kindle for reading material, the ability to view my photos saves me from buying and carrying a tablet when travelling.

I have owned a Fire 10 for a year and a half, and use it a couple of hours every day at home and more when I’m traveling. It will store about 160,000 books (probably a lot more.) I travel a lot where there is no Wi-Fi so, I load mine as follows: about 400 books, about 100 classical music works, 7 full length HD movies, about 100 shorter clips, and automatic updates (when Wi-Fi is available) of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Post. With all that loaded I still have about 1/3 of the memory available.

The Fire’s screen is excellent with great color and very high definition. It handles all of its functions with aplomb. The machine dovetails very nicely with Amazon Prime for downloading all sorts of media files, placing and tracking orders…

To each their own.

I own more than 3,000 physical books and have around 1,400 more on my Kindle. While I love both, increasingly I prefer the Kindle. It is lighter, holds more than one title at a time, is lit, and allows me to do a dictionary search. In addition, if I want a new book, I can have it on my device in seconds AND I don't have to find shelf space for it. I can also increase font size, and a friend who is dyslexic says that buying the audio version with the "printed" has made it much easier to read. I read about three books a week and would rather give up my cameras than my ereader.

I do not think that printed books are going to disappear any time soon-- in fact, in 2015 the sale of ebooks leveled off-- but, I enjoy the many conveniences of an ereader. I buy a lot of books on architecture, however, and they are still best enjoyed and most useful as a print copy.

In answer to the OP's question, Amazon calls all of its tablets/ereaders by the brand name "Kindle." This can be confusing. As noted above the tablets, which usually (I think always, but am not positive) have "Fire" appended to the "Kindle" name, are all full color. The ereaders are black and white. The simplest and easiest way to find out if you feel you can get the most out of a book on a full color ereader is to download the appropriate free "Kindle" app for your existing computer or laptop and then download to it the free sample of the ebook in question. Sample lengths vary enormously, but if the sample for the book you are interested in does not include any photos, you have lost nothing but some time. If you are comfortable with reading the sample on your computer/laptop, then you can decide later if you want to invest in a stand alone ereader or buy a tablet.

My Kindle is great for reading but email and other internet connections are, well, just plain sloppy. Don't fit the screen, etc.

The reason is Amazon wants you to read books on it, which they make $$ on, not surf the web, which gains them zero revenue.

Paper manufacturing is one of the most polluting industries worldwide. Reading on an E-Reader is sustainable vs. crunching trees into paper.

I have several kindles from upgrades. I have a tablet with a Kindle app (free) on it which I use for all my Kindle books. The Kindle is proprietary, and has some restrictions on which apps you can download etc. I would only buy a Kindle if I wanted the Paper White model that is in black and white with no reflections and can be read in the sun. If yu just want to read text, it is outstanding. Otherwise, get a nice tablet of yur choice and download the Kindle app.

One of the advantages of reading on a tablet, computer or phone is that some of the Kindle versions and iBooks versions have videos or hot links to videos.

I was resistant to kindle, having virtually uncountable books. I was given a basic one by my wife a couple of years ago and used it without liking it much for a while. Key advantage to me, other than the photo use of the new one, is that as a speed reader I would have to carry several books or run out of reading material on longer flights. With the kindle I have a large library at my disposal, more new books a click away. Can't say I like it as well as books, but it sure does simplify things when travelling!

While I have always felt this way, about 5 years ago, I got tired of looking at stacks of dusty books and running out of space to lay them. Plus, it was arduous to find that paragraph I had read about a subject.

I've gone completely digital, much to my chagrin, but it's just simply better all around for me.
