Making a lot of high quality prints I have always used Epson photographic printers. I did have a problem with one printer, finally gave up and purchased another Epson, problems did not occur too often. I now own an Epson 3880 with sever problems, the printer is not that old. As I will be purchasing a new printer thought I would check to see if others have experienced problems with Epson? Should I be considering a different brand, if so, who? Doug

I have been using a pro 4880 for about 5-6 yrs and find that I need to print something about once a week and have no problems but if I let it sit for too long without the print head gets clogged and requires a lot of cleaning.Other than that I have been very satisfied with our Epson printers.

DMF - You don't describe the nature of the problems you are experiencing, but there are lots of folks here who may be able to help. You might consider subscribing to UHH's "Printers And Color Printing Forum" and posting details of your problems and other print gear you are considering. At the bottom of this page, click on the "All Sections" link and scroll to the "Printer And..." link to subscribe. I recently bought an Epson XP-330 multi-function printer (to replace an HP 812) and so far I have been very satisfied.

I had an Epson, I think a 2200 with a small roll feeder. Just out of warranty I had a problem and the repair was more than it was worth, so after a little research I got a Canon instead. I have two Canons now and they work very well.
My bigger Canon(iPF5000) does not have the black ink problems that the bigger Epsons have when you switch between mat black and black so I would not buy an Epson again because of that ink problem. Good luck

Epson seem to be liked by many, but so are Canon. Worth a look if you decide to move away from Epson.

The print colors appear similar but do not come close to original, does not have a smudge appearance. I have had clogged ink heads when sitting without use some time, quickly solved by running a cleaning cycle. The prints resulting from the clogged heads show with lines across the print.

Epson and Canon seem to be the primary choices for photo printers. I have to agree with Ralph that there may be someone on the Printer part of the forum that could help you with your 3880 issues. I would not give up on it if it is not that old.

This sounds like you need to calibrate your monitor with one of the available hardware/software tools.

I do not believe the problem is in the monitor as the images look great, just having problems with the prints.

I have been using the Epson 3880 for a number of years and have never had a problem. Never a nozzle clog and I sometimes don't print for
4-5 weeks at a time. What I really like is that the inks really last well and you can make many many prints before having to replace cartidges.

While I cannot say, "never clog", this has not been a major problem. I really have nothing to compare cartridge life with.

One advantage of Canon printers is that the printerhead is pre-heated before actual printing can begin. Clogged inkjets is the main problem with color printers. Heating inkjets clears or prevents most inkjet clogging. The downside is that a Canon printer takes about 2-minutes to warm-up after switched on.

My 3880 has been going strong for a number of years. The only issue I ever have is I sometimes have to reset the IP address.
