Manual for the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

I am planning on purchasing the new Canon 5D Mark IV. I will probably have to have the Canon manual printed to be able to read about all the new features, and make personal notes on the facing page. Publishers like "Wiley" will not have a manual, or at least a "Field Guide" of the 5D MIV for a long time. I'm still waiting for the "Field Guide" for the 7D MII. Wiley, did publish one in the "Dummies" version, but read like a beginners photography book. I did have the Canon manual printed for the 7D Mark II, from "Manualsink.com" but it is a over 500 pages long, and is difficult to carry in the field. I like to place the book in my lap, and go through all the settings on the new camera, and make some shots before I take the camera to a shoot. The "get started" pamphlet included in the Canon box just doesn't cut it on such a new, advanced camera.

If you own a 7 D M II, then you pretty much know the 5D M IV, the few little differences are easy to grasp, just take it out for a couple of days, shoot with it and you're set!!!

If you have a tablet you can download the manual to it. They come in PDF format and are indexed and use hyper text links. I have several Manuals loaded to both my larger and smaller tablet that I usually carry "in the field". They are great to carry around this way, take up little space and you don't have to worry about tearing a page. I have a small note pad with my smaller tablet for taking notes.

I have a new Panasonic camera with a 400 page .pdf manual. Most of the pages are of little interest. Based on the table of contents, I'm printing the pages of interest for personal markup and putting them in a 3-ring binder. I have no need for a 400 page book!

Most of the more interesting "new features" are being well covered in YouTube videos. Some are from Panasonic and more are from independents.

Yup! I own a few Canon bodies and they all have some features common to all. The 5D is a bit of a jump, for most, but I'd imagine you already having their top of the line crop frame body won't be such a leap into the unknown.

Happy shooting!

I found this through a Google search for the manual for the EOS 5D Mark III, none to be found for the Mark IV. Don't know what changes have been made to improve upon the Mark III, hope it assists with learning the functions. No other manuals available, not even from Canon.

If you're buying the camera new, it will come with a manual. I bought the Mk III and the manual that came with it (one in English, one in Spanish, which is helpful), fits nicely in my camera case. I've earmarked the pages I thought I might need to find in a hurry.

The 5D mk IV is not announced yet. August 26th is the widely mentioned date. Availability is less clear, but the documentation should be available to download before too long.

That small sized manual is what I call the "get started" manual. I gives just a few of the main features of the camera, but not all. The real manual comes on the CD that is included in the box. For the 7D Mark II, the actual manual is over 500 pages, and fully explains each function, and how to get to it in the camera menus. Even the published books on the camera does not include everything about the camera.

Well, you made me go look. The manual that came with my camera has 396 pages plus a really good index. It's the perfect size for carrying with me. Frankly, I don't think I even looked at the manual on the CD to see if it was more detailed. This manual seemed to be detailed enough. Perhaps they are now putting out a shortened manual, much like they are with the little P&S's? To me having a manual on a CD seems sort of worthless. I can't read the CD while I'm 20 miles from civilization. And when I pay thousands for a camera it seems a bit cheeky of the manufacturer to make me use my paper and ink to print out the manual.

I agree. Many PDF download manuals are up to 400 pages. Who is going to read all of those pages. I'm going to take your advice on the 3 ring notebook usage, rather than scanning the table of contents.

Go online at Amazon and look up the Expanded Guide on your camera. I got one for canon rebel sl1/eos 100d camera. Its a nice book and has a lot in it. It cost about 20 bucks.

Canon is now "abbreviating" the printed manuals they include with the cameras. Ostensibly to "save trees".... but I bet it saves them quite a few $ too.

The 7D Mark II printed manual is 150 pages. But it's full manual as a PDF on DVD is close to 500 pages, plus there's a separate manual of about 50 pages for the AF system alone.

The third party guide books usually aren't available until some time after the initial introduction of a new model such as the 5DIV. "Early adopters" of any model better be prepared to figure things out themselves.

And, even after some time there are fewer authors and publishers doing those guide books these days (7DII is a good example).

The "good news" is that they 5DIV is predicted to use pretty much the same AF system as it's predecessor... and that's usually the most problematic thing. Most other functionality is likely to be very similar to 5D3, too.... at least as far as still photography is concerned. Just it's file sizes will be changing, it will have some new video capabilities, Live View AF should be noticeably faster, and it will probably inherit a few other features found on the 7DII or 80D.

Canon 5D Mark IV hasn't even been formally announced yet. It's rumored it will be on Aug. 25 or 26... with initial deliveries expected sometime in September.

It will probably be at least 3 to 6 months after the camera is released before any guide books will be published for it. At least that's been the trend in recent years.

I don't imagine there's a whole lot new to learn if you already have one of the newer top end cameras. Sure, there are few unique things but not many. It's one of the things Canon is doing right.
Also in the past, Canon would print you a manual free and mail it free of charge. That was 5 years ago, don't know about today. It was just part of the stellar customer service.
It's interesting that people will read 1000's of pages of novels but won't read 400-500 pages of a manual. I suspect it's those people that buy an advanced camera and only use the center focus point because they never actually learn to take advantage of and use a camera!!!
