I had the opportunity to get an inside view of Grand Central Station this weekend. What a wonderful place and photo opps abound. Here are just a few.

Terrific pics. I am impressed that you called Grand Central, by it's correct name. It is NOT grand Central Station. BTW the below ground story is even more fascinating. There is a hugh power plant many stories below the main floor.

Most landmarks have many "back stories". As an example, for many years the underground confines of GCT provided living quarters for a fair number of homeless people.

I really like the angles of your compositions. It fits the premise that sample compositions are often the best since you have eliminated clutter.

And prior to 1990 Grand Central had a changing display of the World's largest photo transparency - the 18-foot by 60-foot Kodak Colorama.

jerryc41 mentioned a problem with the painting of the night sky on the ceiling. The most accepted explanation is that the Vanderbilt family commissioned the artist to paint the constellations as they would appear looking down at them from above, not as they would appear looking up from the earth, the natural perspective. Whether or not this was a personal statement from the Vanderbilts is debatable.

Interesting. I passed through Grand Central many years ago but didn't have a camera or a chance to look around. Nice set.

Thanks for looking. Outside of straightening a little, they're right out of the camera.

Wonderful photos. How did you get permission to take photos there?

I was part of a tour with a great photo meet up group. We all had our cameras going as the guide was enlightening us on the history and sharing her passion for the place with us.

When I was there in 1978, I just walked around pointing my camera at things and pressing the shutter button. With all the cell phones in use today, I'd be surprised if they tried to enforce a "no photography" rule ... but, then, I was told {by uniformed and armed cops} "no cameras allowed" when I tried to use my tiny Canon Elph to take a picture of the "L" station at Chicago's O'Hare Airport {I saw lots of cell phones being used to take pictures elsewhere in the airport.

Grand Central Terminal is all commuter rail now, so I don't know whose rules govern, but the usual Amtrak rule is that you're allowed to take a picture if you're allowed to be where you want to take the picture from.

We were on a tour with someone from the Urban Planning Board Department. I haven't tried doing it on my own yet. But, already want to go back and retake some of those I missed. I know I'm not going back to the tennis courts (yes, there is one there for $80/hr. You too can play tennis in Grand Central). But, I'll find out.

That's an amazing building, and it came close to being torn down a couple of decades ago.

Thanks for looking and the comment Jerry. I'm grateful to Jackie O. for her determination to save and restore it.

Thanks for looking and the comment. Our Long Island Photo Meetup group set it up. They were going on to Times Square for more, I needed to get home or would have joined them.
