Virtually all my photo editing has been in Picasa because it is easy and free. Now I find out that Google is doing away with it. So... I need new software to edit/file my work. My issues are that I am financially challenged (read, poor) and I cannot seem to grasp the various terms used in programs like Photoshop and Lightroom. Any advice, recommendations, and contributions are heartily encouraged! Blessings to all!

...For layers, some will recommend Gimp. I can't disagree because I've not tried that software for many years. When I did, I found the user interface confusing and the learning curve steep. That was a long time ago, however.

I had been using an old version of PhotoShop Lite for several years on a Win XP computer. When I switched to Win7 {where old software fails} I installed gimp instead; it is different from PS Lite, but it gives me comparable power, and once I became comfortable with it {took about as long as becoming comfortable with PS Lite} it was essentially the same to use. I still have an old Win XP computer in the basement {to run my old Nikon scanner}, and when I use the PS Lite on it to "fix" scans, I get as confused as I previously did switching the other way, from PS Lite to gimp.

Check out the latest version of Corel PaintShop Pro X8. Easy to use and reasonably priced. Upgrades are also reasonably priced.

Been using Corel PaintShopPro for a long time. They offer the current edition at sale prices just before the new edition comes out. Because I have Corel, they are currently offering an upgrade to the out-going version 18 for something like $25 or $29. I's easier to learn than Photoshop (-:
Gimp has been too convoluted for my poor ancient brain, but maybe I should give it a try again.

Thanks 3g! I have Gimp. Can't get my feeble brain around all the convolutions there. I will look into Corel Paintshop Pro. I really need something versatile, thorough, AND user-friendly. Maybe that's the one. Again, thanks!

There seem to be two basic ways of interfacing with Photo Edit software - using sliders or having more precise direct control. The first software I had used sliders, and I had trouble adjusting to the PhotoShop / gimp approach; now I find that sliders give me less precise control, but that is just me. You should use whatever you are most comfortable with, whatever makes you most productive, because ultimately that is why we have those tools.

Why yes I did indeed. Many of the postings were quite aged and I am looking for something more current, hoping that, just maybe, there was something new, thorough, and user-friendly. Sorry to have burdened you with the redundancy.

BTW, this topic has been discussed numerous times on previous postings -- did you search for answers before you started yet another discussion?[/quote]
