Chicopee -As it happened the offer of the SX60 was 'withdrawn' for now, so I've got the SX50, loving the zoom and the enjoying the quality. Many thanks!

We have both...the 50 and 60...the sixty has some advantages...much better viewfinder and the ability to shoot RAW in more modes...but overall the 50 is the go to bridge around here...go get it now!

All I have read is that the SX50 is better than the SX60, but not read any explanations as to why this is. So, why, how is the SX50 the better of the two?

Frankly, I like the SX60 better. I own one but have used the SX50 many times. The SX60 is a little bigger and easier to grip, bigger screen, more zoom, 21mm vs. 24mm. That little bit of wider lens helps me capture the interiors I shoot for Realtors. 25% more pixels. Focus peaking. 60fps video. SloMo. The SX60 has an external mic jack that allows me to put a lavalier mic on subjects I interview. This addition of an external mic jack is very important to anyone making videos.

I paid just over $500 for my kit that included, a 32gb card, extra battery and a flash, plus the usual junk. I watched Canon Refurbs and advised four friends to buy the SX50 for prices that were as high as $179 and as low as $149. Haven't seen a Canon refurb sale in a half a year. Meanwhile, the SX60 prices have come down. My friends let me borrow their SX50 for several blocks of days so I could learn the camera and teach it. It is a fantastic camera. For the price, it is far beyond expectations.

For reasons above, I prefer the SX60 but am pleased I have helped four friends buy the SX50. Best deal out there, if you can find it.

Thanks. I had to ask, because there are a lot of dedicated SX50 fans out there, and a number of them have opined that the SX50 is preferred over the SX60, but no real reasons stated.

One private individual's opinion, just like mine. Read the comparisons of the professionals: http://www.google.com/search?q=Canon+SX50+vs+SX60&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

MontanaTrace-Useful - thanks for that link. I'll enjoy the SX50 I'm sure....and if the 60 becomes available again, will have another think!

I have the opportunity to buy either (not tempted to buy both!) for what appears to be a reasonable price.
What do those Hoggers who have experience of both prefer/recommend?
I currently have a Panasonic FX150 which is very good but I do hanker after the greater zoom for photographing wildlife etc.
Advice/experience welcomed please!

I have the SX50 & like it very much. I understand the extra length on the 60 is not to good.
See the attached photos with the SX50

1200 mm + 1200 digital=2400 conditions must be good to get this @2400

I had the SX50 for a brief time and I wish now that I had kept it. I sent it back because the lcd sreen quit working except in playback mode. I normally would not use it but the large screen is great for some subjects that are not moving. You can pull the neck strap snug and this prevents camera shake. The IS on this camera is amazing even when hand holding and zooming in at 50 or 100x. If I had it to do over I would buy it in a heartbeat. I can't say for the 60x. I have sent a photo to give you an idea of the camera's potential. This one was at 100x, hand held.

A couple of early goes with the new secondhand SX50...ironically neither taking full advantage of the zoom potential.
Advice/improvements welcome!
