The D5500 camera is a good mid-range camera. The D7XXX series cameras are more advanced and the recently released D500 has replaced the D7200 as the flagship DX camera. There is nothing wrong with the D5500, it's a fine camera. If you are looking for something more advanced in a DX, look at the D7200 or the D500.

D7xxx series may be "more advanced" in that they have more features providing more shooting flexibility. But the image quality of the D5500 is exceptional and is just a notch below the D7200 particularly as far as dynamic range is concerned. It is an extraordinary camera with a touch screen not matched by the 700 series.

I own a D5500, it came with 2 lenses an 18-55 and a 55-300, case, 2 batteries and a 16 Gb SD card. (Purchased from Costco ) I have since bought an 18-105 which I use most of the time. I think it takes great pictures. I specifically chose the D5500 over the D7200 for the flip out screen that can be angled for viewing. That was just my preference for the choice.

I have the 18-105 lens too. It is a great walk around lens.

The 7xxxx series has the motor for focusing. The 3xxxx and 5xxx do not. Enough reason
