The D5500 has been around quite a while. it seems like it is loosing out to newer competitive brands?

Or is it still a top grade camera?

Is there a newer D5500 coming out soon?

It seems like every time I buy something, a newer advanced model comes out in less than a month.

Oh well , That's technology for you.

The D5500 camera is a good mid-range camera. The D7XXX series cameras are more advanced and the recently released D500 has replaced the D7200 as the flagship DX camera. There is nothing wrong with the D5500, it's a fine camera. If you are looking for something more advanced in a DX, look at the D7200 or the D500.

DX is how Nikon designates it's cropped sensor gear.

Try some comparisons and see what the experts think. Yes, there will be a D5600, and it will come out two months after you buy a D5500. :D

If you are chasing technology and want to wait for the latest then you will always be waiting. You will never have the latest and greatest for long. Get the best item that suits your needs, the latest you can afford then settle in to become the best you can. Lenses are a better investment as they seem to last a bit longer before being replaced.
That said other UHHrs seem to believe the D5500 to be a good camera.

I own a D5500, it came with 2 lenses an 18-55 and a 55-300, case, 2 batteries and a 16 Gb SD card. (Purchased from Costco ) I have since bought an 18-105 which I use most of the time. I think it takes great pictures. I specifically chose the D5500 over the D7200 for the flip out screen that can be angled for viewing. That was just my preference for the choice.

My preference for cropped sensor Nikon is the D5300. It includes GPS and WIFI and doesn't have a touch screen. I think a touch screen a terrible idea because the LCD sucks battery power.

BTW so does the GPS so I don't use it.

You can get a refurb D5300 for under $500. Beware, though. If you have an older Sigma 150-500 you may need to get it's firmware updated to work with the D5300. Sigma does it for free bit you need to ship it to them.

I hated the weight, button system, and unreadable green screen of the D7000. I don't think later D7xxxs improved on those failings. I did like the viewfinder and two cards.

That said I'm feeling GAS pressure for a D500. It has lighted buttons.

Best Buy Store can not keep enough Nikon D5500 cameras in stock online. I wonder why that is?

I do like the wifi on the D5500. I can set it up and take pictures from my smart phone. Good for family pictures, no need to set timer and run to get into picture. You can see the shot before you take it.

He means the newer version of the D5500. It would probably be the D5600 or whatever number Nikon gives it. The D500 is an upgrade from the D300. The D400 was overlooked.
