I currently have the original 100-400 which produces some very nice images, several of which I have posted during this last week. (If you wish to look at them click on my Avatar name, you will then see a list of my recent posts).
I am considering the MkII as I hear it is faster at focusing. Whilst I do manage some decent BIF shots, I also miss some whilst waiting for the lens to acquire the target.

Hi jr, first of all you have some great pics there !! Guess I have the upgrade fever , never to stay ahead of new things . the 100/400 version 1 is a good lens it's just I don't like the push/pull collar for zoom. Again nice pics

I just purchased a used Canon 100-400, which I took out for a serious test ride yesterday.

While I did get some decent shots, I still need to complete my review of those shots compared with my existing lenses. I did shoot the same subject with all 4 lenses, at the same settings on a tripod.

I did find the common complaint of the lens clunking out to full extension, if it was carried with the lens facing towards the ground. Also, being the first day with the lens, I found it difficult to get used to the pumping action to zoom in or out, after using the screw action of my other 2 zoom lenses.

And, yes, I lost some shots yesterday, because it couldn't focus fast enough on a few of my subjects.

I'm still trying to decide if I'll keep the keep or not.

I assume you are aware that you can adjust the tension on the lens to prevent it sliding to full extension when pointed down.

Yes, just walking around if it is tight enough to stop the creeping or the bang when hanging off the shoulder, when an opportunity pops up to snap a pic it's just another step to loosen the ring to slide the zoom to compose I know I'm picky it's just I like the turn to zoom my other lens have
