I visited the Klamath National Wildlife Refuge yesterday for the first time and was amazed at the many species of birds. This one stumped me. It was not listed and is obviously a shore bird. I have not been able to find it in any of the Oregon bird lists. These bird where in large flocks. Would love to see if anyone on UHH can tell me what it is.

Perhaps a glossy ibis? I like #3 of this series very much.

edit - I checked range, and if is a glossy, it's lost :)

It was the most colorful bird especially if the light was just right. There were hundreds of them. I see that they are
mostly on the east coast so this was a good find at least for me.
Thanks for letting me know.

Definitely a Glossy Ibis, a permanent resident of Florida, particularly South Florida where you can see large flocks of them. They migrated most likely from Africa in the late 1800's and have been expanding their territory ever since. Looks like this bunch took a heck of a big leap. Nice catch

I went snooping around and found a map that has the range of the glossy ibis; seems that it has been upgraded in the past few years.

Sorry, what you have here is a white faced ibis. Plegadia chihi. The glossy ibis is pretty much confined to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The white ibis has the white rim around his face, the glossy ibis does not.

Great shots though.

This bird is a White-Faced Ibis, not a Glossy Ibis. Note the white border surrounding the eye and at the base of the bill. Also the White-Faced Ibis has bright red legs whereas the Glossy's legs are darker.
