Should I Ask Permission?

I just saw a thread created by a young lady who said she posted one of her images on Facebook asking for anyone wanting a print on canvas. Apparently one of her clients stole the image and had it made displaying it on a wall, which was photographed by a relator for the sale of her house.

My question is; I occasionally find a stunning photograph that I download to my computer for use as a background screen. Many of the ones I use are from National Geographic, Popular Photography or submissions on this forum. These are for my private use, and only used on my computer as the lock or wake up screens. Am I in trouble?

You are not the ones that most photographers object to. But you should ask out of courtesy. Legally, you should always have permission, especially if you are making money from someone else's work such as a realtor having someone's house photo in their office on display. They should have a release from the photographer who should have a release from the homeowner.

I don't mind people downloading and using any of my images as long as I get credit for the photo and they contact me in advance to let me know. Not that anyone would want my photos. LOL

I'm with Bozsik on this.
I am thrilled and honored when someone, friends or relatives think enough of my work to want a copy. Just ask me. It's only the right thing to do.

For a background screen?

No...lol...don't ask, nobody cares.

If I had to hassle through asking to use an image for my desktop wallpaper I'd shoot myself.

I will in the future ask for permission from a UHH poster to use his/her image as wallpaper on my computer. What to do about National Geographic though?

I do tend to agree here. It's for my personal private use and in no way garnering any type of revenue from the images.

Legally? Hell, I am no lawyer.

Ethically. Hell, how would you feel if you caught me using your Studebaker photo you posted back in March to sell my rust bucket Studebaker pickup on Craig's list? Doubt if you would send me a thank you note.

Unethical? I don't know, but using someone else's creative work, without permission for your own use, sounds a bit slimy to me. But if you don't have enough creativity to do it yourself....still sounds slimy.

Well, I don't see myself as 'slimy'. I simply posted the question asking for intellectually sound advice. Unfortunately yours was not in that vein. Have a nice day.

Perhaps you should follow your conscience and there lies your answer. It is obviously playing on your mind which made you asked the question.

For a background screen. If your computer is never seen in public, no problem. besides -who is going to know. The photo poiice won't break down your door a 3 AM and demand that the photo be stricken from your computer. Here is one of mine you can use

I think if you are using someone's picture on your own computer, they would like to know. Most would be thrilled that you thought so much of it.

On the other hand, you joined this "PHOTOGRAPHY" site a little over three years ago. Come down out of the attic, grab your camera, and go shoot something yourself that you would like to look at when your computer wakes up. :)

Seriously, the fact that you asked the question tells me you are already pointed in the right direction.
