An interview with plessner,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have always had a camera in my hand and enjoyed sharing the fun and beauty that can be captured.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Mostly do scenics, travel pictures, stuff around the farm, and grandkids and their many activities

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I think a good picture is one the makes me say "OH WOW" when I first see it. Can be the lighting, the subject, or the composition or a combination of all 3.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I use a Sony A65 I was out working in the yard and noticed the shadow forming on the shed. It happens rarely, to be so perfectly centered, so I ran for my camera before it moved too much. And luckily the weekly contest was shadows!

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I enter my pictures into picassa, where processing is limited. Do plan someday to sit myself down and learn something a little more complicated.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I am continually amazed and inspired by all the great photos posted on UHH.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Maybe a few pretty clouds in the sky!

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How addicting it could become and that I should have switched from film to digital long before I did

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
When traveling I have a vest with many pockets that I wouldn't be without

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I use my 18-250mm a lot just very handy

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
not usually any

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
not sure I love to travel and the photography gives me an excuse to do it! we are farmers and some of my favorite photos were taken here on the farm

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Just when people say--you have a nice camera, it must take nice pictures!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/135710953@N06

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep snapping away!

An interview with burgerboy,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been taking photos for over 60 years and into photography for 20.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have had no formal training.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Sharp focusing on the subject and composition.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Can you walk us through it? I am currently using a Nikon 5200 and vary between aperture and shutter speed priority depending on the situation.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I try to do as little post processing as I can.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I am influenced by positive feedback from family and friends. I was trying to capture a photo of a butterfly and when I downloaded it the butterfly was slightly out of focus but noticed the shadow of the wire on the backdrop.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I would focus more on the wire and shadow and forget the butterfly.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Rule of thirds. I used to always try to center the image and have found you can more often than not draw more attention to the main subject when it is not the center of the photo.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A tripod to help sharpen the images.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
50-200 Telephoto with a wide aperture.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I do not have any other than the popup on the camera.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I would be fishing, golfing or woodworking.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have posted on ViewBug and facebook.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Take as many shots as you can and always have a camera with you.

An interview with Gary K,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I believe I have always been interested in photography, but somewhere around 1966 I really got the bug. I starting a family and had friends that shared my interest in photography.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training in photography except for reading a few books. Because of family health issues, I gravitate to subjects closer to home. I enjoy macro photography of flowers and bugs.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I try to keep things simple without a lot of clutter or distraction. The background is nearly as important to me as the subject. With digital photography, I can always fix a lot of stuff.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used my Nikon 7200 with an 18 to 140mm lens. There wasn’t much setup involved for the “shadow play” photograph. I simply went to the grocery store, located a shopping cart at end of the parking lot, oriented the cart to get an interesting shadow affect and shot the cart and shadow at various angles and poses.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Post Processing is half the fun. I usually look for clutter and distractions, and then make needed corrections. I thought the shadow would look best as a black and white. Finally I crop the picture to show just a small element of the cart and of course its shadow.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I am pretty much a full time care provider, which makes it difficult to find time to go out and do real photography. The Ugly Hedgehog weekly contest is my primary motivator. It gives me a challenge every week and allows me to be creative.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I always find thing I would like to do differently or change. It may seem like a small detail, but the cart’s wheels were not aligned properly. For me it’s a distraction.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I understood the basics of exposure and depth of field, but it would have been a great benefit to know more about composition.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
The best accessory for my Nikon D7200 is my “right angle viewfinder” for close-up work and a remote shutter release.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Although my 55–300 mm lens is not my most used lens, however I believe it is possibly the most versatile if I had only one lens. I can still do some close-up work and distant shots.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
The photography I typically do doesn’t require special lighting. I like natural light whenever possible. About all I have is an external flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
If I couldn’t do photography, I would probably do more watercolor painting.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
My photography isn’t very interesting; however I plan to try some nighttime photography.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No – I just submit contest pictures to the weekly Ugly Hedgehog contest.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
It is unlikely I can offer much advice to the Ugly Hedgehog family, except for keeping it simple and know your subject. I enjoy looking at other people’s work, and try to emulate their compositions and techniques that I find particularly interesting.
