wchs1961 - have you looked an a extension tube? You can focus a lot closer, particularly with the EF 25 II.

Hi CHG Canon,
I have not tried an extension tube.....thanks for the suggestion. My preference for the 300mm f4 lens is the versatility as a "walk around" lens while hiking. It gives me the ability to shoot pretty much anything (wildflowers, insects, snakes, birds, etc) except scenery, and I carry a wide angle lens for those shots. The only downside is the weight.

Wayne / all - the extension tube is next to no weight as it includes no glass. It just changes the minimum and maximum focus distances for a lens. This is a great macro tool for any prime lens.
