This is for any Hogs who have the Speedliter's Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites, by Syl Arena.

I had posted as question about this in another thread before I got an answer back from mr Arena himself. I'm posting this correction for those of you who have this great book, in case you're interested.

There is a typo in this book (I have the Second Edition, which I think is latest). Mine is the Kindle version.

- In Chapter 8. Flashing Manually
- The section titled "My Workflow: Using One Speedlite in Manual Mode
- First Subsection: Camera Mode (Varies By Situation)
The first bullet reads:
Quote:
Subject still: I will shoot my camera in Manual (M) because I want to control depth of field with the aperture and ambient (background) light with the shutter. I start with my camera in Manual 90% of the time. Aperture Priority (Av) is also an option as it allows control of depth of field via aperture—with FEC as the means of adjusting how the ambient light is captured.

The last sentence after the dash-- should read "with EC (not FEC) as the means of adjusting how the ambient light is captured."

This has been confirmed by Syl Arena himself to me via email.

Basil, when I read that in your post, I did not comment, for one I did not have the book and I also had no idea what FEC was. It makes a bit more sense now!!
Thanks, SS

As it was written, it is saying to use FEC (Flash Exposure Compensation) to control how ambient light is captured. I may not know much, but I knew that didn't make sense. I was very happy to receive an email back from Syl confirming what I suspected - it was a typo and he meant to say use "EC" to control how ambient light is captured.

I have the first edition and found it a very useful book. Your observation made total sense, and I have no idea if the first edition has the same typo or not, but the confirmation is good to have.

Thanks for taking the effort.

Thanks for posting this. When I read the other thread, I couldn't understand why it was printed that way either. Good to know it was a typo.

Thanks Tracy and Mark. I probably would have read right past it had it not been for the fact that Syl made such a point of how to control ambient light vs reflected light earlier in the book.

As I started reading his book, I was feeling pretty good about understanding everything he was talking about - it all seemed so clear and logical. Then I hit that statement and my bubble burst! It seemed to contradict everything else he'd said up till then.

I to have the book and didn't really notice the typo. I normally take FEC to mean Federal Energy Commission and I wouldn't associate them with anything that has to do with flash photography.

Just looked in my copy which is the first edition. The first edition does not have the typo since the sentence ends before the -- of the second edition.

Syl indicated the error should be fixed with the third edition.
