There is a solution/fix for clean installs. For those who "want it back and have performed a clean install"

I think it depends on whether it is an upgrade to Windows 10 or a new installation where photo viewer isn't included...

You beat me.

You can get Windows Photo Viewer on a clean install if you don't mind doing a registry editing.

As I and mwsilver have mentioned. plus there is an opportunity when you go for the upgrade to have the process check your system for compatibility, and unhook all your peripheral devices before embarking on the install. If there are any issues with those, they will be taken care of when you plug them back in.

Most likely all the devices you own will install cleanly when you hook them back in. If not, it's simply a visit to the web site for the device and update drivers. Personally, out of 20 plus upgrades, never had one of those problems.

Thank you for those two links....

I absolutely abhor the black interface that comes up from the Photos Desktop Tile. I took it off my computer altogether. Totally bogus!

However, these links fix that problem for me, as I prefer an explorer style interface.

And so timely... as I have a Windows 10 "hands on" class at the college this weekend with 10 students. People are lining up for classes on Windows 10. This gives me one more excellent Windows 10 based attribute to show them.

I have found by and large that the desktop tiles on the tablet mode simply slip one more greasy interface into the mix for functions that are in 10 carried forward from 7.

The mail tile, however, does allow a decent synchronization function covering multiple mail carriers, both IP and web based. I am now managing my 3 mail accounts... Yahoo, Gmail, and outlook on the one tile interface.

So a mix of feelings regarding tablet mode start screen and the desktop tiles. Much to investigate there, but most navigation is desktop-like as Windows 7 from the smaller non tablet mode menu, until you have a chance to explore the tiles. Pick what's best out of the old menu system or new out of the tablet mode.

One other thing I do is turn off live streaming on the majority of the tablet desktop tiles to cut RAM usage in background streaming. Waste of time and RAM to have all that activity blurring your screen and eyes.

And don't forget the new "hidden menu" which is a right click on the start flag/window. Fastest way to Control Panel, and many apps and location you are used to from previous Windows versions.

The hidden menu is something I use a lot, and is a great help if a Windows 7 type interface is wanted. I'm not a fan of the tiles at this point in time.

Enjoy the class....

I am not a fan of the tiles either, but the hidden menu gets me to the places that I use to screw around with Windows faster than any previous version. The rest of the apps that I use the most are down on the quick launch where they've been for years.

I started with IBM punch tape, DOS, then Win 3.1, continually upgraded to newer versions and now to Win 10. It is the best. I also had Win 7 Pro and updated. Actually, I updated within 2 weeks of the initial offering.. No issues. If your PC is compatible, don't hesitate - do the FREE upgrade. No MO!!

As of Jan 1, 2016 over 200 million users have installed Win 10. Did some (very, very few on UHH) of them have installation issues? Yes, but most were caused by insufficient updates to their existing systems or incompatible hardware and drivers.

Some say, "if not broke, don't fix". Win 10 is not a fix. It is a superior OS compared to Win 7 Pro. As with any new software, it does take a little while to become comfortable. (So does a new car, new refrigerator, TV, ...) It can be configured to look like your "old win 7". It is very flexible, with many, many options. Is there learning required? Yes, but isn't that true with most technology? We have all been through many experiences of learning. Trust your ability to assimilate knowledge! Besides, there are many members of UHH who will gladly offer assistance.

That's my opinion. My recommendation - DO THE UPDATE!!

Sorry OnDSnap. No insult intended. From my experience and assisting many others with the upgrade, (I am the amateur PC guru in my complex) I simply disagree with some of your opinions. But I do respect them.

Mark, No offense taken, not at all. We all have our own opinions. My point is simple, to many so called NEW OS's have been what I call (IMO) disasters. Just behooves me when one must have the newest "whatever" when first released. I think it's foolish, there are bugs as in all OS's, just as with any thing introduced to consumers. Heck we still get updates & fixes for Win 7 Pro and look how old it is, as long as they keep supporting it, I will use it. When they stop supporting it as they did XP and forced into 7, (8...forget about it :) )... but thankfully with few issues, (mostly on older machines). I'll upgrade to 10 for sure, when I don't have a choice...and only with a clean install. Look at all the so called head turners of OS's that tanked. IMO... ME, Vista just to mention a couple. I consider myself advanced when it comes to computers/technology and have been building my own Cad computers for years, enen when DOS was all we had. I also do quite a bit of trouble shooting for probably all my family members and friends. (and they still all talk to me LOL) Anyway...good luck to those who choose to upgrade...I wish them well and no problems. Up up and away.

I've installled W10 on all 3 of our W7systems. 1st one was rarely used, no problems. 2nd one occasionally used, no problems. Last one heavily used, still no problems. Like it a lot!

If you still don't like the Windows 10 start menu (I don't) you can download load the Classic Shell as I did for Windows 8.1 and now Windows 10. It gives you a start menu virtually identical to Windows 7 with no tiles. Attached is my desktop image with Classic Shell on Windows 10. Pardon the sloppiness as i very quickly and poorly deleted a couple of bits of private information.

Absolute agreement here. Classic Shell (free and small) was my go-to solution for Windows 8, which I personally never truly used. But I used it for clients who felt the need to use the "NEW" OS.

I have looked at Classic Shell on Windows 10 and find that it is a very usable system for a reverted menu as in Windows 7.

For me, it's a tossup to use the new Windows 10 and climb a fairly shallow learning curve, without Classic Shell. Classic Shell however is a fairly remarkable bit of program code for those who prefer a VERY Windows 7 or XP style menu system.

Did a desktop from Win 7 and a laptop from Win 8.3(?). Happy with both.

Do it!

I agree with you and have had similar history and past experiences. ME & Vista were absolute disasters. XP was very good and 7 was Microsoft's best OS up until the Win 10 upgrade. I never had 8 or 8.1, but I did some work on computers with 8. I hated it. I did help some 8.1 users configure it to look like 7. I could have stayed and been very happy with 7 Pro. But I'm a "goto guy", always willing to try something new. I'm happy I made the plunge to Win 10. Now,I'm looking to upgrade my components. New GPU & power supply. I don't need either, but I'm a "speed junkie".

Nice "talking" with you. Your posts and offerings of assistance to others is laudable. I admire that.

I am thinking it is time to update to Windows 10. Any pointers about how to do this without too many complications?

I was planning to wait, but Windows 10 was installed while my computer was sleeping. I have been happy with 10. It is fast and easy to use. All of my programs work with 10 without tweaking. My only issue has been the Start Menu not working. I'm still trying to solve that issue.
