I, too, have had a number of weird issues with Windows 10. Wish I could get rid of it and go back to 7 or 8.

Win 10 has much improved security. I wish I had benchmarked my computers before I installed Win 10. I believe that they all run more smoothly and efficiently with Win 10. I did all 5 of mine from Win 7. The ONLY glitch I had was with a video card that was on this computer. The card was failing and caused Lightroom problems. I put in another that I had stored away and everything is fine.

After about 4 months I did a clean install of Win 10. Not because of any problems, but like, Peterff I am not comfortable with the bits and pieces of Win 7 still lingering.

The other 4 I am leaving alone. It's just too much time to reinstall everything.

If you would consider going back to Windows 8 you must be smoking something. I have upgraded many PCs (10+) to Win 10 and have not had one issue with any hardware or software. The main issue people have is that the PC that they want to upgrade probably shipped with Windows XP and both the hardware and/or drivers are way out of date and no longer supported. If you expect to keep a PC until it physically fails then you will find yourself having issues trying to keep up with new operating system releases at some point in time.

Save yourself a bunch of headaches, Back up all your data, Format your drive and do a Clean Install...everyone I know that has done an upgrade has had problems, the older the machine, the more problems to expect. If you do the upgrade...be sure to create your own Restore Point. Windows 10 will create one and does allow for a roll back. But just in case it doesn't work, which I've heard has happened.

The only complication is that at some point the upgrade will no longer be free. Windows 10 is the cleanest OS that Microsoft has released. Go for it.

Depends on you are trying to update from. From 8 a cake walk. From 7 or older I would suggest some personal homework as it is more work and the OS works a lot differently and thus some day to day adjustments.

As for system stability, it is about the best they are done. I understand they did a "better " beta test and flushed out many of the bugs before going prime time.

This is just my two cents worth and my own experience. This probably won't happen to you, but, is meant as a word of caution.

I finally took the plunge but discovered so many things did not work right with 10, and, I just did not like the looks of it, that I gave up and did the reverse thing to get back to 7. That proceeded to crash my hard drive to the point where I had to reformat and reload everything. Thank goodness I did a full backup before starting the conversion. It took days to get it back where I wanted. I won't have anything to do with 10 until I eventually buy a new computer and it's preloaded on it.

I'll wait until my next new computer. Happens every 3-4 years anyway. Several people at our Photo Club had big problems after they "upgraded" to 10. If you are happy with what you have and it works why change?

I am actually amazed at how painless upgrading my wife's machine was--although it lost her user account in the process. I recently bought a new computer with Win 8.1 installed and upgraded to 10 before transferring my life from my older laptop. So far I really like this OS: some major user-friendliness upgrades from 7.

At first I totally was against it because of the fear of screwing up my photo / video programs. So I read all the pros and cons, held my breath and downloaded it after backup. There wasn't any problem at all. Even some of my ancient programs worked! :XD:

I'm happy with Windows 7 on my Dell XPS desktop. A year from now I'll order a powerful, custom built desktop from Digital Storm and it'll come with Windows 10.

I'm a complete computer dummy and don't even know what a "clean install" means. I clicked install and 80 minutes later, I was up and running, after disabling many of the undesirable settings of course ;)

We decided to get off our 25" Dell and get a 27" iMac.
In the process, I inadvertently clicked on the free Windows 10 update button. While not realizing what I had done, I let the Dell go to sleep and I went to bed that night. Later the next day I turned on the Dell and saw an unfamiliar screen which indicated I had updated to Windows 10. After clicking a few very simple update buttons Windows 10 opened and I was amazed at the clarity and speed. All of my files were saved and I am now downloading them all to disk and then uploading to the iMac. The transition to Windows 10 was flawless and I regret that I hesitated to do it for so long.
That's my story....

Chuck,

Make sure you have done all updates for your current Win OS. If you right click on the icon (near the clock), there is an option to see if your system is compatible. Most upgrades have been without issues. In my opinion, it is the best Windows version Microsoft has developed. You have 30 days to revert back to Win 7, 8.1 or 8. It's a clink of the mouse.

I hope it goes smoothly.
