Jenny, Frank, Neil, Tom, Abc1234 and John, thanks for looking and commenting.

The suggestions for alternative framing all have their merits, but I was happy to show the castle surrounded by generous amounts of space, since the surrounding scenery plays a significant role in making this shot what it is. But I did stop short of having the castle shrinking to the point where it gets lost in its surroundings.

I did get some shots from the other side, but to get the sort of framing that I wanted I would have needed a drone or a boat. I'll probably post what I did get when I've had the chance to edit it properly.

It's nice to enjoy a beautiful picture R.G. that doesn't need re-making, and I learned after looking up the history that that "Eilean" is not merely a given name but means "island". Hm, never too old to learn, huh?

Thank you Jenny. A lot of Scottish place names are Anglicised versions of Gaelic names, but occasionally the original Gaelic survives intact. There are still places in the Hebrides where Gaelic is learned first, then English.

R.G.,

Here is a Topic I started a little while ago and shows a shot or two from the other side. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-377046-2.html Purely for your reference, and I am not trying to steal your Topic or your Thunder. Take a look and see what you think, perhaps? Maybe you can compare it with yours from the other side. I really like your shot because it shows the Highlands in the background and seems to frame the image and the castle. Thank you R.G.

Tom

I can see why you like the view from the other side. It has its merits. My shots are very similar to yours but zoomed in a bit. Unfortunately my skies are very flat because it was very cloudy and misty when I took those shots, but that composition does give the chance to have the castle outlined against the sky. If my skies had been better it may well have been my preferred composition.
