Now Lomography has announced a one more new "old" lens with the development of a modernized Daguerrotype 64 mm f2.9 lens. This is a must for all of us who have GAS and like to wait for the brown truck and also those who like to do some retro photography. I am at least looking forward to get mine ;)

It's nice having something to look forward to. Post some pictures of the lens and the pictures it takes.

Since Daguerrotype is a film/plate process, not sure what it means for a lens?

I plainly would not put any Lomo-stuff in front of my camera, period! By the way, Daguerrotype prefers to the process of taking and processing the picture, it really has nothing to do with the lens!

You can get this type of effect using the NikCollection plugins that are free now. No need to put anything in front of your lens.

None of the samples look anything like a Daguerreotype to me.

Interesting terminology for a lens. Daguerrotype refers to an emulsion/developer process and has little, if anything, to do with the lens used. Sure the construction of the lens may be to the standards of lenses when Daguerrotypes were being taken/made.

Well, it is nice to get all those replys, and most of them from vice guys who know much more than me about this thing ;) Thank you so much!! Maybe some of you would also learn a little bit if you would click the link that GoofyNewfie provided. I hope you will like to dig in the history of photography, or rather the beginning of photography. I am sure it is a good change in your daily photographic routine to look away from photoshop for 5 minutes and read a little bit about how things were in the old days ;)

I used to photograph using paper negatives, sort of calotypes. The only difference was I was using silver halide instead of silver iodide. But, the appearance was pretty close to the same.

Silver iodide, silver bromide, silver chloride, silver flouride are silver halides. Silver iodide is not used in silver gelatin papers and silver fouride has no photographic use. Daugerrotype is a process in which a highly polished silver mirror is coated in iodine to create silver iodide. It is then exposed and then developed in fuming mercury. Not sure what the lens has to do with anything. Sounds like the typical lomography marketing tactic

Fuming mercury sounds fun.....NOT!
Thanks for the explanation.
I agree, the name of the lens has nothing to do with the process.
Looks like they are a Petzval alternative. (I kinda like the steam-punk look of the lenses but doubt I'd ever buy one.)
