I bought MacBook Pro yesterday and now looking for a good free program. I use FastStone with Windows for basic editing and like it a lot, is there a program like that for Mac? Any suggestion? Thank you.

It comes with "Photo" and it should be more than enough if you are doing basic adjustments.

Have you tried Photos, the program that comes with it?

you just spent 3,000.00 for a computer and do not want to spend 10.00 a month for a decent program. get adobe cc and learn to use lightroom and photoshop. you will never be sorry for the investment.

I didn't spend that much, it was about $1300, and I use Photoshop on my PC when I need to work with RAW files or play with the layers. I also familiar with GIMP, it is very powerful program, I might start using it again, totally forgot about it.

When I first tried it I was not impressed with it, but later I discovered that I can add more adjustments and that's probably all I need for now. I used to use GIMP a lot, maybe I'll do it again. Thank you.

if you already have photoshop, your license should allow you to install it on your laptop at no cost

Gimp is great software but I would not recommend starting there. Search for a free Lightroom like program to start with. Gimp is essentially a free, open source version of Photoshop and both have a much steeper learning curve than Lightroom and most Lightroom like programs.

It's not free but was designed for MAC users. It's been getting very good reviews and although not free is only $50.00. Just an option to consider.

These are free programs, with a list of no free, but maybe reasonably priced below. Google Photos now allows processing without affecting the original, like Lightroom.

the program Photos is awful..it seems to have gone backwards in the editing tools from the past version..i refuse to use it and wish i could take it off the computer ..i still use Aperture 3 which has been discontinued but since i already own it i can keep installing it..however i have tried Affinity ($50) their new program and am still on the fence about it ..seems to have quite the learning curve..just recently ordered the Lightroom 6 dvd version since i don't want to have to "rent" it for 10 bucks a month..i have never tried using the free programs..

Thank you, David

I too liked FastStone for that 'first cull' and have been searching for similar application for Mac. I did find in UHH someone referring to FastRawViewer. Only about $20 ... I have to check out Mac Photos.

My internal question is "do I add more steps to my workflow as I did with FS Viewer before importing to Lr CC?" I did like the full screen fast vetting FastStone Viewer offered - RAW or JPEG. (if you find a replacement for FS Viewer for Mac - please share)
