Hi! I actually have two questions. First, how can I fix this photo so it looks better? I think the background is way to bright. And the subject's face just needs improvement as far as lighting I think.

My other question is how to best expose this photo in the first place? My thought is not to take a photo in this kind of lighting. But we did not have much choice that day.

Thank you for your help.

If you could had utilized multiple exposures to get an HDR effect, you would had eliminated the sky problem and others as well.

As has been said it is a hard photo to work with - BUT - there is some improvements that are possible in PS.

Here is my effort.

That does look better.

A good, strong 'flash fill' might have softened the shadows nicely. (Flash is not only for inside use).

As stated several times already, there isn't much fix to this image. But when that happens, I turn to my favorite tool: black and white. I have fixed many an image with that tool and this one is no exception.

That is a very good idea for some of those shots I have.

to correct the problem I would have used a flash. This would have filled in the shadows somewhat ....

HDR might be the solution since you might not want to use flash on the beast or it might not be allowed. So if you did HDR with at least 3 exposures 2 stops differences, you'd have a properly exposed sky and properly exposed beast. But I see that you are using Photoshop version 7 which is antique. You might want to invest in Photoshp CC where you can use it's 32-bit HDR feature. You'd want to shoot raw images so that you have as much data to work with as possible.

The light source is behind you causing a glare on your hat. I would have changed the camera angle to the other side and would use a flash to remove shadows.
