I saw a Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon, it's twice as much as a Nikon lens.

What's an "Art Lens"?

True, but also a marketing brand for a very high quality ( and appropriately) costly lens. Bit like buying an Aston Martin or Jaguar instead of a Chevrolet.

You fell for the hype. The Art lenses run from $169 to $999 and includes 11 of their 16 lenses.

Check the link above.

Did I indeed? That will come out in the wash as they say. The result is in the delivery, not the hype if the marketing is good. Let's be fair, some of the the off-brand lenses are better than either the Nikon or Canon (etc.) equivalents.

Your link is just to a brand website, not an independent review.

Try this as an example: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/11/sigma-20mm-f1-4-dg-hsm-a1-mtf-curves

Just for the record, I don't and never have owned a Sigma lens. Canon and Samyang, that's it for me currently.

However I do have to say and ask: "Bill de, Nice hat! Where are your cattle?"

I'm not saying they are bad lenses. But I wouldn't consider the "Art" line premium, high priced lenses.

However I do do have to say and ask: "Bill de, Nice hat! Where are your cattle?"

The cattle are in the freezer. We now refer to them as steaks and roasts. :)

Nice response!

Hey, I work in high tech marketing, so I sort of get where you are coming from.

There is an old joke that is very sadly still true:

"What's the difference between a used car sales person and a computer sales person?"

"A used car sales person knows when they are lying!"

Same applies to cameras these days, unfortunately!

Hope you cook the steaks rare. Blue is the term for my preference!

Cheers!

Thanks Bill and Peter for the links and comments!

I was just surprised that the Sigma lens was twice the cost of the Nikon!

KM, some of the art line of lenses are a rear focus design. The rear focus design tends to be very sharp but it also tends to be VERY expensive as it has a lot of elements in it. The std 50mm lenses also tend to be very sharp but are a very simple but effective design thus keeping the cost WAY down. And keeping the cost down was the primary goal when the std 50's were designed since they were being issued as the standard lens on most every film camera ever made.
Also the rear focus design makes a lens very long thus bulky and heavy along with the expense.
If you are the kind of shooter that goes on 8 hour forays and carries a small arsenal of lenses, weight can become critical.
So there are more than just a few pros and cons to WHY a lens should be purchased, of which lens performance is just a small part of that process!! ;-)

They still have several other lenses, EX, DX, that are not classified as being in one of their new lines...

Its Sigma's designation for their higher quality lenses.

Photozone is generally a tough critic.

How does Sigma get all of those independent reviewers to praise their Art lenses? That is some clever hype!

Have owned two Art lenses, both fantastic. The 50mm 1.4 is the sharpest, best image quality lens I have used or owned.

Good joke! Are any of you familiar yet with Sony's new line of G Master lenses? If so, are they more hype than substance?

I have only one thing to add.

I humbly stand corrected.
