After 48 years transitioning from Pentax to Nikon

After, all this time, using Pentax, except about a 2 1/2 year stint using a Canon 1D, when I did some sports photography. I still shot film with Pentax, though. Then, i bought a Pentax 100D in 2006, after selling the Canon stuff. Two years ago, I bought a used Nikon 800E, for landscapes and it's great. I used it to shoot some birds in flight. I was shocked at how easily it tracked them. The out of focus losers is only about 5% and those are mostly user error. With my Pentax K-5 and K-3, my keepers are only about 60% and I have to work at it.

So, I have already sold my Pentax 560mm and will sell my Sigma 150-600mm. I then bought the 200-500 Nikon and have a Nikon D500 on order. I feel like I sold out.

I am going to keep the Pentax K-3 and a few lenses, the 100mm f2.8 macro in particular.

Oh, well.

46, it took you 48 years to get to where you are shooting with #2.
I have a concern that you may not have enough time left to ever experience shooting with #1!!!!

Don't feel bad. You have found what works for you and you were smart enough to realize it. Change happens in life. I'm grateful for any time I have to make pictures with whatever works for me.

Continued growth for you and enjoy your new adventure. It only gets better as it goes along!

Look at it this way- take another 48 years to ditch the Nikon stuff and switch to Canon.

Very interesting post. I shoot Nikon and my s/o is devoted to Pentax. I've commented many times about how often he has trouble with Pentax focus. He does get some amazing shots but has way more trouble tracking BIF than I do with my D7100 or doing other kinds of selective focus. He often complains that his camera focused on something in the background rather than his intended subject. He's considering another K-3 but I wish he'd consider Nikon instead. I'm sharing your post with him. He also has a K-1 and K-5 and we both shoot a LOT of nature and also do sports photography for a yearbook company for the schools. He always seems to have much more trouble with his equipment than I do with mine. And our company has much more trouble getting his fixed when something breaks. Several times they've just given up and given him an allowance because Pentax costs so much to fix. I think you're making a good decision.

I can tell you one thing...the Nikkor 200-500 is a fine lens and you will enjoy it...My wife has one on a D810 and its a great combo...

I take it out and shoot with it while she's at work...

I will be interested in what you think of the D500...

Are/Were you aware that Pentax has just announced the "Full-frame" K1? It looks like a real beauty in both aesthetics and function, and considering the great feature set, such as 5-axis IBIS, 36mpxl, pixel shifting, nifty articulated rear screen, etc., looks like a bargain at $1799.

See the highlights at:

Scroll down to last Thursday's blog posting. You might have sold out just a little too soon!

The first slr I wanted was a Honeywell Pentax. Then I read an ad in NatGeo for Nikon F. Fell in love immediately.

If, by #1, you mean Canon, I did for 2 1/2 years or so. I never liked it. It was big and clunky and at that time Canon looked digital. I don't see that anymore, but it was obvious then.

I did and I have looked at it, but the problems with Pentax tracking focus will remain with the K-1 or any other Dslr Pentax makes until they fix the slow focusing of their lenses. I am not willing to wait.

A D810 doesn't have enough frames per second. In that respect, I prefer my K-3 and it's 8.5 fps. I, also, prefer the ergonomics and menu of Pentax.
I, also prefer, righty tighty, lefty loosey. Nikon should have it's butt kicked for that idiocy.

This is my opinion...not trying to be disrespectful or argumentative...my wife and I shoot nothing but birds in flight...I shoot a D7100 with a Tam 150-600 and she shoots a D810 with a Nikkor 200-500...all hand held

That extra 2.5 frames a second wont really help...what is a half a frame per second anyway???

The extra frames a second help a lot for pelicans diving for a fish and egrets and herons fishing. I know. I've missed some with the D800E.
