Any of the better known photography websites can be trusted.

I would stay away from EBay, Craig's list and the like. I have heard of too many bad things happening with both; every once in a while something good but not often.

Good luck in your search

Hogwash!!!

I have been purchasing from ebay and CL for years and have never had an issue. On CL I meet at my bank in the lobby and test drive the item I'm interested in, and if I decide to purchase I simply go to the teller and withdraw cash. My most recent purchase was a Canon 5D MKII for $900.00 that was in like new condition with 24,000 shutter actuation's. (verified by Dire Studios Canon Shutter count) I'm always a generation behind, simply because I can't afford the newest, greatest and latest.

ebay has an excellent protection plan that is stellar. You can't possibly go wrong. I have made at least 15 purchases on ebay and CL and have never, never had any issues with the equipment I bought.

Do you have confidence in buying used or refurbished cameras ? If you have done so, would you share sources ?

Have purchased cameras and lenses on eBay and on Craigslist. Just ordered a used camera from KEH; "the jury is still out".

Have yet to have a bad experience.

6 refurbs, all from Cameta.com. Had one that acted up, they replaced it immediately with absolutely no hassle.

I like the fact that they have a much longer warranty on refurbs than any of the other major suppliers. Never needed any warranty work, but it sure is nice to know that it is there.

Also got a few refurbished lenses a while ago (B&H) Lenses were perfect, just not really as good for the purpose I wanted them for, so I sold them.

Only used stuff I get is for low dollar stuff, that way, if I do get taken...it isn't for much.

Since my original answer, I'm beginning to rethink the whole "used" marketplace.

I have no qualms about FACTORY refurbished.

But, lately, I'm finding "used" photography gear from the reputable dealers, actually cheaper than C'list, eBay, Amazon, etc. I've not had to return anything to Adorama, B&H, Cameta, KEH, yet, but I know people who have, and I hear nothing but good things. (the camera and lens rental shops might be another more reliable source)

I'm thinkin'; why should I pay more for an item from a private party, with no return privileges, when the "used" dealers are cheaper and easier to deal with?

It's simply your choice. Do as you please. I have purchased gear on ebay, and CL exclusively at much greater savings, and have never had an issue with anything I purchased, than with B&H or Keh (they are quite high IMO) Ebay has a stellar buyer protection plan, and with CL you get to see the item hands on, test it and take shots with the item. Nothing is finite in buying used equipment, somewhat like playing craps, so do as you please.

I bought a refurb from Buydig.com. They are an authorized dealer for Canon. I haven't had any problems.

I prefer a refurb over new because the refurb is thoroughly inspected for resale.

Ebay from sellers who regularly sell cameras and lenses and have a 100% customer rating (or 99%+ and the negative complaints were trivial) and who describe and picture the camera or lens is in good working order. Read the description carefully and if the camera or lens is not as advertised, Paypal will refund your money. Also the item needs to be priced very well, generally about half the price of the item for sale new. Every camera and lens I have purchased in the last 4 years was bought that way. I got one bad lens and Paypal refunded my money including postage both ways.
