Any of the better known photography websites can be trusted.

I would stay away from EBay, Craig's list and the like. I have heard of too many bad things happening with both; every once in a while something good but not often.

Good luck in your search

Sorry Tramsey, but "I would stay away from", if you have no better info than "I have heard...... etc". Just hearsay. Sorry !

Well said. People get killed on the roads. Stay at home it's safer. Mostly.

Ebay and others have dangers, but can be safely navigated. Protections are there, but not as secure as B&H, Adorama, KEH and some others.

Pay the price, or play the game. Simple as that. Learning how to play the game takes work, but also has benefits.

I bought a refurbished direct from Nikon.
camera showed less that 100 clicks. ( of course they can change the numbers in the factory, Im sure)

no problems it looked like new and as if it had never been used.

A friend bought a used camera on ebay. It didnt work at all, and the person selling it, didnt answer emails and ebay doesn't seem to care.... which is why I would only buy from a reputable dealer.

Just received a couple of days ago a refurbished D7200 from Adorama. The camera came with 0 shutter actuations! The refurbished D5200 I bought 6 months ago from Cameta had 200 actuations. I buy only refurbished (5 Nikon bodies and 8 lenses). By doing that I have saved thousands of dollars and everything has looked and performed like new so far.

Adorama & B & H photos. Never had a problem with any of their refurbished products.

I purchased two factory refurbished Oly's, the first from a dealer, the second directly from Olympus. Both were like-new. A few minutes of on-line research can save you lot$ of money.

Refurbished photo gear is my first choice. The only drawback could be the warranty, but I've never needed a photo warranty in over forty years of shooting. I have also bought used cameras and lenses on ebay and from KEH.

I think buying a refurb, may be better than buying new, (which I did a couple years ago) A refurb is either returned for a fix of a problem, or maybe used at a Photo show, or as a demo at a camera shop...but it's been used and perhaps problems popped up during a demo, well it gets fixed instead of being sold not used but new to one of us and then we find the problem and have to send it in for repair, so we end up with a refurbished camera anyway. I guess the Lease a car mentality, when brought in for service, I think you get better care due to the fact they know they may be getting it back and need to resell it for a profit, sooo... fix it and fix it good. :)

I got my D7100 on Craigslist. The person that was selling the camera gave me the serial number so I checked with Nikon to make sure it was not gray market, had not been in for repair and was not reported stolen. Also checked with Lenstag (everyone should register their equipment with them). Last but not least checked the actuations. So long story short got an almost new D7100 (1976 actuations) for $425 and has worker GREAT.

I buy only from the factory refurbished site for Canon. I trust their technicians to go over the camera or lens thoroughly. I wouldn't necessarily trust camera shops to do the same job.

I use Ebay and the following rules. Seller must have at least a score of 50 sells and a 100% approval rating. Item must be mint in the box, and I use paypal which protects me and the seller must have a 30 day return policy. I have always gotten a good deal with no mail backs.

Jerry, when I bought my D7000 refurb from B&H, if I recall it came with a 2 year from them...
