Well, I could recommend some really good back-drops,
but as you're in hiding, it might not be worth your while.

If you are near a metropolitan area, check craigslist. I've picked up several for real cheap that way. As a plus, you can actually see what they look like. Note that shipping can be pretty expensive for these, so buying local is good.
If not, you might try the PPA marketplace; see if any one there wants to sell some.

I have never bought a background. I've been in the photography game for over 40 years. I make my own background so I get exactly the effect I want. You can make one with a large cloth (paint drop cloth) and a bucket of say brown die slip it in and out quickly and you will have a motley effect. then maybe use a mid green die and do it again. Remember you background should be wildly out of focus. another method I've used is using a vacuum cleaner in reverse and a spray bottle attachment. spray it all over with very dark brown, then lightly spray a section in the center 2/3 a bit lighter (the same brown with some white),then again a bit more white in the mix. Then get a cloth on a stick and dab a spot here and there gradually working into the center. This way you can get away with out a background light .If you give me your e-mail and Ill take a photo of my main background so you can see the effect.(it took a lot of experimenting but bit by bit I got what I liked the general idea is that cold colors go back and warm colors bring the background closer to the subject

You can get Savage backdrops inexpensively, I use the 10'x20' ones in paper and they hold up just fine. There about $40 ea. from my local camera store.

Can you suggest a place where I can purchase a 20'X10' "seamless" blank backdrop? I do group photography and need the seamless backdrops. thanks for the hints on dying.
Actually I am looking to purchase rather than DIY. My photography business keeps me busy full time.

Got my first from a photo shop that had rentals, used it was $25.00. Picked up another 6 from a retired photographer, (with stands), purchased two from Savage, (good stuff), my son purchased a green backdrop so I could do some green screen for his digital stuff, (Savage again) and I purchased a white painters cover to DIY (still something to do . . . tomorrow). So, look used first, check local rental places and watch for guys hanging up the camera!! I use 'em all the time and love it!

Lee, like most, I have a variety of paper, both wide and 64".
BUT, when I travel, even sometimes when I fly, I have two cloth backdrops(bd), one in black and one in white that I can fold and put into a suitcase. I bought both of mine in Ensenada, Baja, Mex. Even in that small town there are a dozen fabric stores. I love going to them. I even have a big piece of Camo that would make a nice backdrop but I'm gonna use it to make a blind.
My two bd's cost about $30 each and are 9'x20 feet.
You can probably find something similar on the Internet.
But the suggestion about the painters drop cloths is a great one other than you have to color it! Maybe tye-dye!!! LoL. I do also gave a drop that I got with some poles one time. It's a tight sail-like cloth about 7'x7'that has been painted black on one side and white on the other with what appears to be regular latex paint just rolled on.
BTW, I recently got a king size bead spread that has a very interesting pattern on it for $5 that is pretty big as well. Could be a good source.
