I think that it's most likely that you have your camera set only to shoot when focus is achieved as rook2c4 suggested. Also, did you have your autofocus set on AF-C?

1.4 won't focus faster, it will just be able to use a faster shutter speed (assuming you use a wider aperture). You need to adjust your focus mode and/or shutter release mode.

For starters, are you shooting f8 or wider?

I am shooting at f4.0 and my shutter speed is approximately 1/500 of a second. Am shooting in Aperture Priority.

Are you confusing shooting mode with autofocus mode?

I think that's your problem. Once your camera attains focus, your subject moves out of focus. That's why you need to use continuous in sports. I'm not talking about continuous frame shooting now, but continuous focus. AF-C.

Gotcha. Will report back how the shoot goes tonight. Thanks for all the advice.

If you had success with the camera setup using the 24-70 and the 70-200, the same setup should work with the f1.8 if not then its the lens.

The 1.8 should focus even faster than the 2.8's. It will also suck in more light. I have the f1.8D and it's amazing how much light it sucks in.

I think AF-C too. This was my problem. I set the camera up and went out by the road and shot at fast moving cars going by.:)

I use a 50mm 1.8 D on my D7100 with no problem.

I plan to shoot another game tonight and will do some more testing. May have to upgrade to the 1.4 version. I usually follow the action and have the button half way down. Works fine with my expensive lenses; just this slight delay with the new lens....

The f/1.4 isn't really an upgrade. It's just bigger, heavier, and more expensive - all to let in a bit more light. You've been given good advice here about the autofocus situation. One of the first things I do when I get a new camera is set it to take the shot when I push the button, regardless of focus.

SPEED will not solve your problem. If your thinking that way, the 1.8 is faster than your 2.8's. If it was a question of speed, your 1.8 would be faster than your 2.8's/

I've been using that lens for shooting play rehearsals under various dismal changing lighting conditions and I've been very happy with the results. I'm also a BBF kinda guy.

First thing first, the 50mm lens is not intended to be a sport lens. Your 70-200 will do much better in that respect.
You do not mention the camera you are using with the lens. It has already been mentioned that if your camera requires a motor in the lens for AF the focus will be slower or impossible to achieve.
You stated that you prefix focus. Are you using manual focus? If using AF to prefix the distance as soon as you activate the AF the lens will refocus again unless you are using the back button to AF.
I seriously question that you have a defective lens and in regard to the lens be assured that you have a great optic.
