The advantage of an f1.8 is that when the camera focuses, the lens opens to its widest aperture, the f1.8 at the time of focus. That's why it's called a fast lens. It's able to focus fast. It doesn't mean that f1.8 is the best aperture to actually shoot at.

Before the age of auto-focus, they were called "fast lenses" because the greater aperture allowed for higher shutter speeds to be used.

If he shot with the 70-200 he wouldn't need to crop and would consequently have better images.

For anyone who didn't notice though the really interesting thing is the score. It's 77-16 with the visiting team ahead and 5:40 left in the game.

Ken, which team were you there to photograph?

Luckily, both. The final score was 81 to 18. It's called a "building year" for one of the teams....

I get my best results at 2.8 with your lens. I have the same one. Might want to try a few shots. I find my focus at 1.8 must be dead on. Basketball is so fast I am unable to get that sharper focus.

Really nice action shots!

Steve....It might not be a great lens indoors, although I've used it to take video of 3 year old soccer, but it should be good for daytime baseball, etc.

I like- not love- the lens. More light would have helped for sure. If nothing else, I learned just how much I can crop at high ISOs.

Sorry, I could have used worse. Each week someone tries to take a simple question and make it a Canon vs Nikon confrontation . It needs to be addressed, and imbeciles identified. You can ignore it, I will not. Both manufacturers excel at producing quality lenses and cameras. Our human race can't do the same.

The camera focuses at the max aperture, stopping down to take the picture.

I have a football from the 1939 game when Michigan beat Chicago 85-0. Chicago used to be in the Big Ten, and Amos Alonzo Stagg, at one time, was one of the great coaches, and Chicago one of the great teams. This, however, was Chicago's last year in the Big Ten and last year to play football. Dad told me that they were like a high school team.
