Trying to use Digital Photo Professional

I have a Canon Rebel t3 and was trying to use the Digital Photo Professional software to work on some of my photos. I have not used it in a while and it says that I need updates. When I try to get them from Canon they ask me what camera I have. I can't even figure out which mine is. Some are brown units, lens units, etc. All I know is that it is EOS Rebel T3 with 18-55 lens. DS126291 # 182063129224. How would I get what I need to use the software? Thanks

Hi, It is asking for a camera serial number which should be on the bottom of your camera. There are two versions of DPP 3.x and 4.x

It looks as though the T3 (1100D in Europe) is supported in DPP 4 now. You can run both versions if you wish. DPP 3 will be a little more familiar with your past experience, but DPP 4 has new features that will clearly be the future direction.

Try downloading the software from Canon Europe : http://www.canon-europe.com/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_slr/eos_1100d.aspx?type=download&language=EN&os=WINDOWS%2010%20%2864-bit%29

Canon has recently made a lot of changes to the USA site, and done a terrible job of it. It's hardly worth bothering to try and use it now. Who ever designed the new site should be flogged, keel-hawled and fed to the polar bears!

In my past experience any valid Canon camera serial number has worked, even before my camera (T3i) was supported by DPP v4. The T2i is not yet supported with DPP4, but a T2i serial number works. Don't omit any leading zeros....

So any T3 kit with the camera serial number should do it. I tested your number 182063129224, and it would allow the download to proceed.

Good luck.

Good luck!
If you download version 4, be prepared for a small learning curve. It's completely different than 3 and is layed out a lot like LR.
It's much better but takes some getting used to.
I had a heck of a time with Batch Processing and pasting recipes!
The tools are all there, they are just in different places to access them!!!
Call Canon if you have problems!! Good luck ;-)

Peter, thank you so much for the information. I have been using version 3.15 and was not aware of version 4. Nor was I aware how much better Canon's European site was than the rather poor US site. Much appreciated!

OK it looks like we have got you past the first hurdle successfully if you have DPP 4 downloaded, installed and hopefully running. The fact that DPP 3.x is still there is what is actually supposed to happen. You might want to check version numbers, the latest versions are DPP 3.15.0 and DPP 4.3.31

So, here is the rest of story. DPP 4 is not a simple upgrade for DPP3.x, it is a completely new piece of software and a complete replacement for DPP3.x . However, Canon DPP 4.x does not yet support all EOS DSLRs or other digital cameras. DPP4 was introduced with support for a few new models and a few of the older high end DSLRs. Slowly more support for older models is being added. The current list is here: http://www.canon-europe.com/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_slr/eos_1100d.aspx?type=download&softwaredetail

So, for some older cameras DPP 3.x is still needed. If you have a T6s (860D) or 5Ds R you need DPP4. If you have a a T2i (550D) or SX50 HS you need DPP3.x, with the T3 (1100D) you can user either or both. If you have either older Canon cameras, or a mixture it is worth checking for new DPP versions every few months and checking to see which models have been added. EOS utility appears to be in a similar transition and there are some other tools only available for some of the newest cameras.

I would recommend that you also download and install DPP 3.15.0 which should get you to the latest of both DPP 3.x and 4.x, they can both exist side by side and you can use whichever you prefer or are familiar with.

Hope that helps.

I believe v4 works only on RAW files and not for all camera bodies.

DPP v4.x works with both raw and JPG, as does DPPv3.x, the tool layout is a little different, but it's all there as far as I can tell.

DPP is adding more supported cameras with every release, and it would make sense for Canon to phase out DPP v3 at some point in the future, or at least freeze development, updates and so on.

Igor, you probably have both of them on there. Since 4 will not do that many older cameras, the new version does not supersede the old version and both will stay on the computer with their own icon on the desktop.
You can use then interchangeably, but the older version won't read the new cameras such as the 5s. Maybe this helped. ;-)

Okay thanks. I'll keep working on it. Right now I am downloading them but they don't seem to be working. All I see is the old version which will not work.

Continue downloading. Then we can work on installation and so on. I'm not a MAC guy, but I expect others can help with that end of things....

Good luck.

I know this is a hijack, but while I have some DPP users around, I'm wondering if anyone has some thoughts on why I'm not getting DPP v4 to edit JPEGs. I went through the manual from one of the links in the replies, but the icon I have circled isn't mentioned. I've never seen the v4 software to edit a JPEG on either of my two win7-64 machines which prompted my comment / thinking the software was RAW specific.

The file isn't locked. I was converted from a RAW image. But, I don't think that should matter.

Change to the tone curve tab, or other tabs in the tools window, the controls are there....

As SS said, it's a layout thing and finding where they have decided to put things. Frustrating until you find them and work it out!

I got in touch with Canon this morning and they said the t3 camera did not work with DPP 4. They told me that I needed to reformat my camera card. Trying to figure out how to do that.
