If a camera bag can dissolve a lens, I think the repair is the least of your concerns. Are you keeping that bag inside the house? It seems very unlikely that the bag itself caused the damage.

I have a Sigma 75-300 mm zoom lens. I put it into a new camera bag and it got ruined. I think that some of the material in the bag out-gassed and partially dissolved the plastic of the lens barrel. Anyway, what should be hard plastic is kinda sticky and the lens is stuck so that you can’t zoom it. Right now it is just a 75 mm lens.

My questions:

Can this be fixed?

If so, would it be worth the cost?

If so, where would be a good place to have it done?

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I would get a old of the bag manufacturer and let them know what their bag did to the lens and perhaps they should pay for the lens .. worth a shot .

A waste of time and energy. How can one establish that a bag dissolved a lens?

I don't think that was the problem of the bag, he only assumed it was. Other wise the other plastic part of the lens and the camera will be felt sticky too!

Are you sure it is 75 - 300 and not 70 - 300?
Thanks,
Mark

Who made the bag? I think that other members here would like to know in order to avoid buying something like that.

Just curious. Is you gear insured by a rider to your Home Owner's policy? I took that out about 6 years ago. It provides me with peace of mind. I'm very careful with my gear, but should the unexpected happen, I'm covered. It is not that expensive to add to an existing Home policy.

Find out how much it cost to repair, price of a used one then Contact the bag manufacturer an where you bought it. If they won't help with the repair or a replacement lens. Come back on and let the rest of us know the problem AND the name of the bag manufacturer.

That lens is listed on Amazon for about $145, so, unless it's a different lens than I think it is, it wouldn't be worth repairing if you have to pay for the repair.

can someone explain to me how a camera bag can ruin a lens?

I can only be about 99% certain of what happened, but this never happened before in any bag. When I got this new bag I had my camera with this lens attached in the bag. When I removed it to use it felt sticky and was very difficult to zoom. It wasn't very long until I couldn't zoom it at all. I know enough about the chemistry to know that outgassing of some of the materials in the bag could cause this.

Ha-Ha, that's funny. Actually, the OP didn't explain the mechanism of damage to the lens ...
Well, I get the Booby prize for reading the OP's 1st post too quickly. He said he guesses something in the bag "outgassed," i.e. some sort of chemical reaction. Everyone who inquired as to what the brand of the bag is should, in my opinion, consider whether this hypothesized chemical reaction is due to some other substance having been introduced concomitantly or prior to that lens being placed into the bag.

If so, throw it out, don't let it affect your health!
The lens is not that expensive any way, it's not worth to fix it, labor cost is expensive.
I have a Sigma 50-500mm zoom with a malfunction motor and they would charge me hundreds of dollar for repair. I didn't do it. Now it's my spotting scope.

Sounds quite sensible to me!

I missed your comment/question going through responses the first time.

Yes I'm sure; it is 75-300.

I appreciate your suggestion about my homeowner's insurance. I hadn't thought about that.
