I have a Sigma 75-300 mm zoom lens. I put it into a new camera bag and it got ruined. I think that some of the material in the bag out-gassed and partially dissolved the plastic of the lens barrel. Anyway, what should be hard plastic is kinda sticky and the lens is stuck so that you can’t zoom it. Right now it is just a 75 mm lens.

My questions:

Can this be fixed?

If so, would it be worth the cost?

If so, where would be a good place to have it done?

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I suggest contacting the bag manufacturer to see if this is recurring problem with their bags. Ask, since their product ruined your lens, what will they do to correct the issue?
Worth a try. Good luck.

I suggest contacting the bag manufacturer and let them know of the issues with their bag and ask if they will pay to have the lens fixed or send you a new lens. Can't hurt to ask. Tell them you can send the bag and the lens for their inspection and solution to the issue. Good luck.

Anything can be fixed. Is it worth it? We would kind of need to know the cost of repair as well as the cost of the lens.

Contact both the bag manufacturer and the lens manufacturer. If in fact the bag caused the problem, they should have a lot of complaints, unless Sigma used something unique in this particular lens.

This was a good place to tell somebody about your problems. Hopefully telling somebody helps you feel a little better. "They" say it does.

Now it's time to tell the folks who are in a position to help.

Good luck, and let us know the outcome.

Far from being an expert on lens repair, I have a suggestion as to how you could improve the yield from your 3 questions. Give more background information.

If I were you, I would also state the following about your damaged lens: crop vs FF; range of maximum Apertures; model name IF it is known that there's more than one generation; lens mount; and what you paid for it in US$ as well as what year it was purchased.

The last two pointers may help someone determine whether the repair would be worth doing. The lens' features, I believe, help give one, in the abstract, a better 'feel' for your item. I don't know for certain, but the choice of one repair facility over another may be influenced by one or more of the lens' features.

Good Luck.

From the information you have provided the answer is most likely a simple no. Not worth it. You can probably get a new one for a lower cost, and maybe a used one for less than the cost of shipping and getting an estimate.

I'm not familiar enough with Sigma to know if this is actually an expensive lens or not, but if it is this one or similar: http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-Zoom-75-300-Focus-Canon/dp/B00QXI0I32 I would just by another...

My sympathies. I experienced a similar problem, but just with a cheap filter pouch and inexpensive white balance caps. Did teach me a lesson though, solvents can be brutal....

Hi Don. Welcome to the Hogg. I see you are in Illinois. I'd call Sigma Lens Support first(800)896-6858. They have a local service center on the north side of Chicago in Elk Grove Village(out by O'Hare Airport) called Bigston Corp. They do the service work for many major electronic companies including Sigma, Canon and Epson. They updated the firmware on my Sigma 150-500mm lens a couple years ago. Bigston's # is (847)439-3500. Good people to deal with.
Good Luck.

Thanks for that info, DonB. I'll get in contact with those people. The lens is old enough that I doubt that it is still covered by the warranty and I really have doubts that it is worth the cost of repair -- if it can be repaired.

I just did a search for this lens. It appears that it is no longer made. B&H has a use one for $60., so they are not worth a whole lot. Since I don't really need this lens right now, I probably won't spend to get it fixed.

Ha-Ha, that's funny. Actually, the OP didn't explain the mechanism of damage to the lens. I had, I believe, that very same Sigma lens but with a Sony A-mount. As I was entering a London taxi in 2005, to go from a hotel to an airport, a twit of a bellboy dropped my Tamrac bag to the curb about four feet below. When I got home, I checked the lenses and camera; only the Sigma was damaged, but permanently.

Anyone looking for a good place to have lenses and cameras repaired, I found a little shop in Willow Grove PA called Authorized Camera Repair. They do really good work for a very reasonable cost. I've had several lenses cleaned and repaired there and I will definitely use their services again. They have a Web site and they ship.

Through it in the garbage. You can get a used replacement for $60, or a brand new one for $150. Though I would use this opportunity to upgrade to a better lens.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/used/47715/?gclid=CjwKEAiAw4e1BRDfi7vghaWU9jESJACzo9jujcD2_CblbssrlNigtfJX5l1MwiihpLg_c56oSxIisxoC4YPw_wcB

You can get better lenses that will not break the bank, that offer better performance at 300mm, that are made of better materials and will last longer. I would also toss the camera bag if you can ascertain that it was poor materials that broke down that caused the problem.
