Have you ever felt that connection that makes a place special and unique? That feeling where you are a part of the moment when shooting an image? Its called A Sense Of Place and we want to talk about how you establish it in your photography.
A sense of place expresses the essential character and spirit of a locationwhat makes it special or unique, such as its cultural or natural identity. It is a moment in time captured in an image where the viewer can sense being there... JIM CLARK
PHIL DOUGLIS suggests, No single image can usually do this job by itself. To offer a true sense of place, we need to present a number of expressive images about that place, grouping them together as a photographic essay, a picture story, or a series of sequential images. Hopefully, when we have absorbed the meaning of them all, we will feel as if we can grasp the nature of that place.
Help us pursue this concept by sharing your own thoughts, resources, and images. I'll post examples so you can get the idea.
WHAT TO SUBMIT: In a
separate thread, please post a set of 3-4 related images that illustrate your own Sense of Place with a location you know well or felt a personal connection to. We hope youll resist the temptation to include well-known iconic subjects, and instead choose more uncommon or intimate views that spoke to your deeper experience of the location. Please keep any descriptions brief and let your images tell the story. (If you need to add an extra image or two, it's OK, but if you add too many, you may dilute your feedback).
Don't reply to this thread with your images; use this thread to ask questions about the concept, make comments/suggestions, or add resources.HOW TO SUBMIT: Start a new thread. Title it Sense of Place: (title of your submission). Offer a very brief narrative and attach your images. Titles are fine.
HOW TO CRITIQUE: Think about your emotional response along with the usual technical considerations. Also, are the images connected in terms of subject and processing to form a series? Are they alike/different enough to be interesting as a group? Do the images tell a story? What suggestions do you have for the photographer?
