An interview with chuckr,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been taking photos since 1962 - started with a Polaroid Land Camera.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have a B.S. in photography from Southern Illinois University - I have been a free-lance sports photographer from 1986 - thru 2013. Since 2013 have been just shooting photos.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
First of all - technique, then meaning (what does the photo say?).

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Equipment - for this photo I used a Canon 7D, 105 Macro@f11, 1.8 secs@ISO 200. A copy of the Bill of Rights on a table top setup using a pair of vintage sunglasses.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Since retiring from shooting sports I shoot everything in RAW. Being kind of old school I try to limit using too much PS - just basic editing - adding contrast when needed, of course, sharpening, etc..

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My H.S. photo teacher, Mr. Ed Sturr, was probably most influential - he taught me how to see and composition. The inspiration was the fact that the Constitution is slowly being usurped and the "Founders" were greatly "Resolved" in their undertaking.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
There was a 15 year void in which I virtually took little, if any, photos - other than that, probably not.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How difficult it is to earn a living being a photographer, especially in the Digital Age.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
17-55mm - it allows the photographer to get close to his subject.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I try to shoot with natural light, I've always had disdain for lighting equipment, so I carry only a flash for impossible situations.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Well, my father used to say to get ahead in the world you should be: a priest, a cop, or, a politician - take your pick.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I ran off 36 shots at a hockey game, after re-winding, I found out that there was no film in the camera!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Yes, at slphotos.com. Mostly sports, but I'm in process of transitioning into other subject matter - it's a work in progress.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep shooting.

Thanks,
Chuck Rydlewski

An interview with Golden Rule,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I purchased my DSLR in 2013 and started playing with lighting and the camera exposure settings.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training. I did read Bryan Peterson's, "Understanding Exposure" and that is about it. I did just purchase two photography courses from The Great Courses and look forward to learning more.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
To me a good picture leads me right to a focal point and the story it tells.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used my Nikon D5100 and Nikon 24-70mm lens with only the natural light. My dog was watching the snow falling while we played outside. I wrapped a scarf around his neck and set the correct exposure for my camera then snapped the photo.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I only use LR 5.1 to post process because I don't have the Adobe package suite. I will quickly flag what has potential and then look at the flagged photos. I will typically add clarity, take away some shadowing, warm the picture, add a bit of vibrance and subtract a bit of saturation. Then I check for noise and that is about it.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Movies that have beautiful cinematography have fascinated me and a once in a lifetime experience would be to learn from some of the photographers who would scout out scenes for some of the old westerns back in the 1930s to 1950s.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Maybe a faster shutter speed so the snowflakes could have been a bit sharper.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I knew it was a very expensive hobby but I wish I had known how addictive it can be. I've got a list of things I would just love to buy.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
No favorite camera accessory yet but I almost always have my dogs by my side and they usually accessorize my photos by getting in the picture.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I don't have enough experience with different lenses but I do enjoy my Nikon 24-70mm/2.8 and use it 90% of the time.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I will occasionally use a circular reflector disc to light up an area that is too deep in shadow.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Find more time to write music.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I wish I was experienced enough to offer some sage advice but I will let others share their wisdom.
